the uss prometheus, was the first of a trial and error experimental ship starfleet had in mind for combatting a vast amount of hostile races in the alpha quadrant,

the romulan star empire was a mortal enemy of starfleet and their ships were very powerful as well as having the ability to cloak, this made combat very hard with them and as such a threat to the federation, the decision was made, to build a ship that could tackle that threat, and also with the added threat of the dominion, tne jem'h'dar, and the cardassions as well as the always certain invasion of the borg, a multi vector, multi purpose ship was built that could do nearly all roles but could be a formidable fighting ship if need be,

her role at the moment, is as a mining ship, but she is very capable of exploration, combat, and trade delivery as well as passengers and varius other tasks, she is a great addition to starfleet command.
