Description
Hermes is one of the very latest vessels from the shipyards of Gutamaya. Initially not often flown outside of the Imperial Navy, the Imperial Cutter is the logistics vehicle of choice for all serious freelance pilots, provided they complete a period of service to the Imperial Navy. After several months of full time freelance service to said Navy, Commander TheDarkLord was accorded the rank which enabled the green-lighting of this purchase. Hermes took over long-range freight duties from Agamemnon, which went on to be a specialist high-speed mining vessel before being largely used as an experimental outfitting platform.

Purchased from Gentil Hub in the Harm system, Hermes is outfitted with 720 tonnes of cargo capacity, and lightweight core internals, for maximised jump range and economy of build. Hermes is now on a third generation weapons load. Initially running seven mine launchers, a change was made to pulse laser turrets in December of 3302, then long range fixed pulse lasers in 3306. This was down to widespread improvement of combat tactics amongst the pirate fraternity. Coupled with the switch to laser armaments, significant upgrades to Frame Shift Drive and Shield Generator have enhanced Hermes' operational capability, but she remains a trade and logistics vessel.

Freight assignments are a mix of short and long-range trading, plus supply deliveries for Imperial powers. Thus, the ship is named for the Greek god of trade, travellers, and border crossings. Hermes was also considered a messenger of the gods.

Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time a combat-capable ship has been named Hermes. On Sol 3 (Earth) one nation had no fewer than 11 warships named HMS Hermes in its Royal Navy, from a 1796 12-gun sloop, through to an aircraft carrier that saw more than 30 years' active service. Earth's affinity with legends and deities saw the first foray into space for the name, with an Earthforce Omega-class destroyer bearing the name EAS Hermes. This ship was flagship in a 'Battle of Earth' in 2267.
