Scout/Small Salvage/Expendable
It's the ship all new commanders start with. I have fully decked this one out, but even so, there's not much to the Sidewinder, and when I don't want to be obvious and need to do a little scouting, this is decent enough. I won't sweat it if it gets destroyed. It has on occasion substituted for the Vulture I used to have in Colonia when my funds were so low I couldn't afford the insurance to cover taking it out. When it comes to size, space and jump limitations, the Sidewinder is not really different from the Vulture. Well, except for the fact that you can sneeze at it and reduce it to dust. With the addition of engineers to the Colonia region of the galaxy, I have now begun engineering it to make it a little more durable, give it a bit more jump range.
Now that I think about it, although engineering can definitely improve upon virtually every characteristic of the Sidewinder, I can't think of a single commander who would actually stay with a Sidewinder and go through everything you have to in order to be ABLE to engineer it fully. It's totally impractical for most of the grinding necessary to engineer. I think it's just fun to engineer it as a hobby after you've built a fleet, cash and materials.
As usual, with all my ships being named a variation of Ceti Fox, "Volpe" is Italian for "fox".
