Exile.

Having ranked up bounty hunting in a RES, it was time to head home. The station had fallen. The civil war was over. I traveled down in Harbinger, my fighter. When I got close I checked the system's status, only to find it still at war! Having promised to remain exiled from the home system until the war was over, this presented a dilemma. I was on the doorstep, but if I entered the system breaking my promise, it would look as if the false accusations I faced were justified - or at least that I couldn't be trusted to do as I said I would.
A Baltimore pirate once said, "a man gotta have a code." Sure, I've shot up smaller ships to claim their bounty. I've taken out ships just to decrease their influence in a system. I'm not proud of that really. ("Greater good" arguments are generally only given by the type of arse who likes killing things for sport.) But if you don't stick to your word, you've got nothing left. At least that's how i see it.
So I put my ship into nearby storage. Picked up a stripped down Viper, and went to collect my smuggler. I returned and found a planet base to spend the night. Here I've got real darkness, real light. So much nicer than the artificial light of the stations. I'll wait out the remainder of the war here, before heading home to clear my name.
Perhaps there'll be a good bar.
