Module Reinforcement Packages (MRP)

26 Nov 2018Krash.Megiddo
I had a discussion with Morbad on the Frontier Forums that answered some questions about MRP. MRPs are critical, can make the difference between survival and the rebuy screen, and are largely mysterious in thier function (at least to me).

Reverb cascade torpedos and/or mines can sub-target the shield generator and bypass all MRP.
  • Not properly subtargeting, just part of the effect.
  • You can subtarget the drives on a ship that has disabled it's shield gen and torpedoes will still do their reverberating cascade damage to the shield gen on top of whatever explosive damage they do to the drives.
Ok, if rails bypassed MRP then every griefer would use them after shields drop to prevent a high wake and I dont see that.
  • Nothing bypasses MRPs other than heat, unsafe drops from SC, or specific weapon effects that do damage regardless of hit location (reverberating cascade).
  • However, MRPs absorb a portion of all module damage (other than from the above sources) and AoE damage that hit's mutliple modules at once can rapidly destroy high protection value MRPs. Also, malfunction attacks don't care about integrity.

Maybe I'm wrong (and that's quite possible), but aren't thrusters external modules and don't MRP only protect internal modules?
  • MRPs apply full protection to internals and half to externals.
  • Thrusters are external for the purpose of what can hit them (explosive splash damage from non-penetrator munitions only hits externals), but internal for the purpose of MRP damage resistance. I believe the same goes for sensors and canopy.
  • The only fully external modules at this point are hardpoints and utilities, if I recall correctly. A single D rated MRP reduces damage to them by 30%.

what sizes/types do you use?
  • 5D/5D/4D
I'm not sure what the "E" types do but i'm testing a 5D/5D/4E config on my conda, but that lowers my overall protection %
  • They have slightly more integrity and take less damage because they protect less.
  • Usually not worth taking them as they don't have the integrity advantage they originally did, but if you can comfortably hold three MRPs, making 1 or 2 E rated isn't a bad idea.
  • If I recall correctly, highest integrity MRP is depleted first, so making the biggest one E should be best.
