Disorder

Vallysa woke in a terror, sheets soaked cold with her sweat. Every night, every night for the past several weeks she had woken like this. Unable to get back to sleep, she made her way to the coffee press built into her ship’s bulkhead and brewed a strong cup.The dream was the same each night. A slow, melancholy wail...a flash...watching her body get torn in half in the third person...a young girl playing “she loves me, she loves me not” while ripping petals off a flower...the young girl dissolves in a burst of acid, flesh falling off bones, until the empty eye sockets are staring back at her.
She foggily glanced over Galnet for the daily news updates, and a surge of anger passed over her while reading a story about local commodity updates. Silly...why had that upset her? Must be the lack of sleep. She took a deeper drink of her coffee, draining it, while absent-mindedly walking over to the machine to make the next.
These dreams didn’t make any sense to her. She wasn’t bothered by killing thargoids; she had helped the Legion slay countless. Then strangely, the night of the small celebration in Polya Coliseum, they had started. In the weeks following the ceremony she had tried to unwind by shipping materials for the Empire’s efforts to colonize the Witch Head Nebula, but every single night the dreams visited her and woke her, screaming and sweating into the silent cabin.
Inexplicably, when she went to help eliminate the ‘goid retaliation to the newly built stations in WH, the dreams stopped. She found blasting holes in scout ships...soothing. Comforting, even. For a week she slept like a baby, and then the news from Aegis came: the thargoids had been repelled.
After sharing in a night of celebration with her small crew, they returned to the bubble to resume their more familiar duties in direct service to the Legion and Lavigny-Duval family.
The dreams resumed. “She loves me” the girls melting face grinned at her and ripped of a flower petal “she loves me not”. Rip. “She loves me”. Rip. “She loves me not”...
