Continued from Spanner In The Works"Are you just gon' look out the window all day, hun?"
Silas was jarred out of his pseudo-catatonia by a cheerful, Southern Belle voice. He hadn't realized how much work it would be upscaling his little mercenary outfit so dramatically in such a short span of time, and he had the details of 15 different active jobs rattling around in his mind, along with finances, operating costs, and of course, their current predicament.
He turned to face his captain
"No, Maria, sorry... just a lot on my mind right now."
Bringing his shiny new Nautilus-class carrier out to Thargoid-infested Maia was not really his idea of a good time, but Silas knew he'd have to get over that real quick in their line of work. Besides, Maria was a competent captain and he didn't want her to take offense.
"Oh, hun, I know you're used to driving the boat but you know, you hired a crew for a reason! Why don't you head down and clear your head."
Silas thought for a moment about protesting, but decided that she was probably right. After looking like he was about to speak for a moment, he simply nodded and headed down to his cabin.
Silas was glad that business was booming, but all the managerial tasks of running what had become a thriving PMC had meant that he wasn't able to be out in the field much. It also meant he hadn't had much time to see his girlfriend. Normally, he would lament to his two most trusted friends and crewmates, but as the company had grown, their duties as his lieutenants meant they were similarly busy running operations. Echo was busy running the pirate hunting operation in Barnard's Star, while Raven was heading up a Civil War contract near Diaguandri.
The most important thing Silas had learned running a large company was that Silas didn't really enjoy running a large company. The money was nice, but there was no action at the top, and it seemed the more people he dealt with on a day-to-day basis, the more lonely he really felt.
So, once he arrived at his cabin, he proceeded directly to the bottle of Old Sol. He removed the cap, and grabbed a glass to pour it in. After staring at the glass for a moment, bottle half tilted, he opted to return the glass to its stand and he and the bottle walked over to his desk and sat down.
He took a swig from the bottle and sat a moment, thinking about what to do with his current predicament. It was then, for the second time in the last 10 minutes, he was jarred from his thoughts, this time by the notification chime on his slate.
Probably just another status report, or another insurance bill to pay from someone crashing an Eagle into a high G planet. He almost didn't check it, but curiosity and habit got the best of him. To his surprise, and with a little pang of excitement, he saw who the message was from. His friend and the 'silent partner' behind Vigilia's expansion, Lambast Mercy, had introduced him to an old hacker acquaintance of hers, which resulted in quite an adventure at the time.
Reading the message, it had become clear that Lamb had not lost her knack for getting herself into incredibly questionable positions with incredibly questionable people.
He smiled to himself, taking another swig and sealing the bottle.
He sent a quick message with the details to his lieutenants, and made arrangements for his slack to be picked up while he was gone, before standing up and walking over to his locker.
He cracked it open, threw on his equipment, grabbed his trusty black flight jacket, and function-checked his trusty kinetic sidearm as had become his habit. Lastly he threw his carbine over his shoulder, slammed the locker closed, and made his way to the docking bays, whistling a pleasant tune as he went.
