Ghosts

06 Jun 2017Keija Suresh
“Hello Keija.” The androgynous voice pauses for a moment, as though savoring the name.

“It’s been a long time. I have to admit, it has not been easy to track you down. Really roughing it out there on the fringes, aren’t you?”, the voice continues, it’s tone slightly amused. It continues in a conspiratorial purr. “Listen, I’m going to cut you a break. Do a few jobs for me, and we’ll see what we can do about erasing that record of yours. You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Being able to travel anywhere in the bubble without having to always look over your shoulder?”

The voice pauses again, giving the listener time for the words to sink in. “It won’t be so bad, I promise. Or at least, not as bad as it could be. What if someone less...sympathetic were to find you? If I can, I suspect others can too. Wouldn’t it be better to make a friend? Hmm?”  A slow exhalation punctuates the final pause, as though the speaker is savoring the last puff of cigarette smoke.  “Think it over.” The connection severs.
