Like the prior day, Aby was waiting for me in the galley with a zero-g thermos full of coffee. I noticed the data tablet was still on the table from last night, relatively speaking. Walking over to it, I spun the display to where I could look down and see it. A list of required modules and sundries was present along with the stations and their prices. Each of those listings offered hangar and module storage space, so I would not have to sell anything but would have it available to change back to the current configuration, as I wanted.

“Any reply from the bubble?” I asked, studying the tablet.

“It will take time for them to correlate that with other sources and study the information.”

I tilted my head toward Aby at that statement. “So, there are more in this sector, other than us?”

“Yes, but who they are, and their specific tasks, has not been provided to me.”

I had no doubts someone was primed to claim the bounty on my head. I wondered if the others were in a similar non-negotiable situation.

Aby’s eyes studied me as I thumped the tablet. “Let’s say I do this. I have no idea where to begin nor what type of sundries are required, or how to select the proper androids.”

Aby nodded, extending an arm towards the corridor that led to the bridge. “The first thing is to get you dressed for success. There are adequate facilities in systems close to our location.”

I paused, staring hard at Aby. “Tell me, wouldn’t my beneficiary profit more if I were to raid a few of the settlements and liberate, oh let’s say, data they could use against those in the area who might stand in the way of whatever it is they wish to accomplish out here?” I tapped the tablet again, walking around the table as Aby’s eyes followed me. “Hell, given enough time, and with let’s say, the right influence and motivation, it might be possible to provide them with far more.”

“If you wish to return to your prior piracy past, that is your decision. It would not be in line with your benefactor’s wishes. Our orders are rather straightforward. What I have offered is a means to provide for both of your desires, without any legal entanglements.”

I paused, looking back at the tablet again.

“I understand the prospect of my offer can be concerning. It requires you to become that which you once hunted. That is before you found it more profitable to hunt those who partook in it. You can still perform that same task. This time you can get paid both before and after.”
I thumped the tablet again. “No cargo modules?”

“Cargo modules would be a waste of more profitable space. As with any cargo, where you sell it, and to whom, can denote its price. As you are aware the markets are fickle. Group business contracts are straightforward credits in your pocket. The more you do the better your reputation and the more pay you receive. In-between you can hunt to your heart's content and get paid again.”

A smirk appeared on my face. The more reputation I get, the more those of my ilk will come calling, and the more bounties I can collect.

Aby looked at my coolly, as if reading my mind. “Now you understand.”
