I read an interesting Logbook entry from Commander YkanelloIt was an interesting to read the experience, an insight into the life of someone not space faring like so many of us. It was a reminder of what life was for me before I managed to get my ship and join what I now call my fellow commanders.
I was not always a commander, and sometime I forget that, and perhaps one day I might share the story of how I managed to fly away from my old life to start a new one.
But the words of the old man, also struck a cord with me, Im not an elite, but I have had my far share of kills, lots of them bounties from people who in the eyes of the government (local or galatic) authorised the attack on this person. Some of these people I am sure where genuine bad people, out to pray on commanders and pilots trying to earn a living.
But others...
What was their story...
An illegal slave escaping his master
A pilot forced to fight opposing factions so he can put food on the table
Caught up in another Civil war, families threaten with death of they don't fight or perform other nefarious acts
A Bounty place on their head for "stealing a loaf of bread" as such because they had no other way
It makes me think, how many lives have I affected by my actions. Commanders forget how much influence we have over our slice of the galaxy, how we affect the political landscape in so many ways. I have participlated in the power play, I helped Arissa Lavigny-Duval take control and influence of systems, systems that may not needed help of the Empire, system that perhaps did not. My small contribution affected the lives of millions.
Perhaps sub consciously this is why I have start more exploration, or transport or trading and less combat roles, perhaps not.
We will never avoid combat, its a fact of life as a commander, but perhaps I will be less inclined to go looking for it, and start working towards the positive influence I can make on the bubble.
