Off The Hook

My work for the Hattori Clan begins in earnest today, and the timing couldn't be better. LYR apparently pulled some strings somewhere and got my terrorist status cleared. That made cleaning up the rest of my identity easier, which is to say, possible. I admit I am somewhat curious as to how he did it, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. At present the most important thing is to deal with this disease. The Hattoris have medical facilities on the stations, and hospital ships, but they are badly understaffed and undersupply. I've been helping them financially, but you can't solve all your problems by throwing money at it, no matter how many politicians seem to think otherwise. And so we are trying to get ahold of supplies. Personnel are a bit more tricky, but in both cases the main problem is the pirate activity in the system. There are also plague ships out there spreading the disease. Most of them are registered with Galnet and are being denied docking, but not everyone plays by the same rules and so it falls to me to find a way to stop them. I don't like killing innocents, but it seems that is what is expected of me and I hate to admit it but I can't think of another way to deal with these people. Letting them spread plague hurts everyone, and leaving them to rot in space only guarantees that they'll live out the rest of their short lives in agony and prolonged suffering. Sometimes weapons are instruments of mercy.
It seems that, regardless of how I feel about it, I'm good at killing, and so that's the job I get. I can't blame my employers, they are in a tough spot and they have to make best use of the resources at their disposal. It'd be stupid to have me hauling cargo when I can just blast the bastards who might have tried to take it from me. At least it seems there is no shortage of people delivering medical supplies - or at least are trying. More will succeed when the pirates are out of the way.
I do have to wonder though. If pirates are intercepting the traders, and stealing medical supplies that were bound for these hospitals, why aren't they selling the supplies to the hospitals? They won't find a better price than a hospital in need. The whole point of piracy is to steal freight so you can sell it yourself. These pirates are acting more like terrorists. When pirates act like something that isn't pirates, you know something is up.
