Western Veil Nebula reached
Welp... here I am. A whole week of travelling and charting planets has led me to here, 1.5K Light-Years from the Bubble.
This is the Western portion of the Veil Nebula, the remnant of a massive supernova which occured more than 16,000 years ago. It's also sometimes called the "Witch's Broom", the "Lacework Nebula", or sometimes the "Filamentary Nebula".
The Western Veil was discovered almost 1500 years ago in the Constellation "Cygnus" by William Herschel, probably one of the greatest astronomers in all human history, and like many supernova remnants, the nebula is a strong source of radio waves and x-ray waves. In point of fact, the image you see above isn't actually how the nebula looks; it's a color-correction after blue-shifting the camera drone's lens. The real nebula, while still comparatively bright, is spread out over such a vast distance (65ly, in fact) that the surface brightness is faint and dim.
I arrived here last night, and after Nira and I took some pics for posterity's sake, I picked a camping spot on a tall mountain of a gas giant's moon. After scanning a couple of star systems, I'll begin making my way back towards home. Part of me is eager to get back on the trail and resume my future goal of charting Bark Mound sites and travelling to Colonia. I do kinda wish we had all arrived together, though...
