Finally got what I wanted - having decided to first gain some rep and rank with the Federation, so that I could buy certain vessels, if required, once in the Colonia area, without restriction, I filled my Python with cargo holds and set off back to the systems where I had started my very first Elite: Dangerous career - in the FK5 2550/Branglal/Siren etc area - many of which were in a boom state, and earned myself around another 100 million credits, in addition to attaining the rank of WO. Not that high, but high enough to allow me to purchase any of the 3 Federal 'tanks' (FDS, FGS, FAS) should I fancy. Now I am finally well clear of the Bubble, and already finding unmapped bodies in every system I am traversing. So far, mostly due to limited time, I've not actually mapped any of them - but on my next proper Elite sesh I will start.
There was much talk of the new FSS saving pilots time when scanning systems, and enabling them not to 'waste' time, fuel and effort, travelling to the far end of systems they were exploring, to no end. I don't see how this can be the case. After scanning a system, pre v3.3, one was presented with a system map. It was possible to see which planets were which, and what was worth visiting for a detailed surface scan. At worst, one could use the HUD holograph to determine the type of celestial body being scanned, and decide whether it was worth detail scanning or not, from that. Admittedly, the occasional one would throw a lefty, and turn out to be not what was expected, but mostly, this method could be relied upon.
Now, it seems the FSS has simply taken the place of these methods - the system map and the HUD holographs - so that the end result is having the same info we had before - only now it takes arguably longer to derive that info.
So where's the big advantage? I don't see it.
