Bug or just plain cheating?

Thought I'd put this here as am not sure what happened. A few weeks ago (about the 12th) I was Bounty Hunting at a high intensity Extraction Site near PRIBYLOV PORT in Jonai when a wing of 3 wanted ships jumps in. I was gona leave them alone when lucky me 2 Security ships appear and move to scan. I waited until the fight started and engaged one of the wanted ships, a cobra mk3, and took it down fairly quickly. Next thing I know am getting attacked from behind so I turn to fight and shock and horror something wasn't right. The 2 Security ships had gone, not been destroyed just plain vanished so I have a Master Python and a competent Viper mk4 (i think) chewing me up.Few minutes later I lost about 700k in Bounty's and 400k plus re-buy for my ship. Having watched a few Youtube video's I get the gist that sometimes the NPC's can just plain cheat but disappearing ships?
I will get the credits to buy an Advanced Discovery Scanner at some point and go exploring >< lol.
