So You want to be a Pirate... Pfft!

First of all, welcome to the only faction not led by eggheads, justice porn weirdos, greedy rich pussies, or idealistic asshats. With the money you start with at the beginning of the game you’re going to have a problem getting a ship threatening enough to reliably lift cargo from a player, simply because you won’t be able to mass disrupt most of the trading vessels until you can afford a larger ship. But, you could get with a pirate crew though (hit up TheCODE, they might let you tag along [Link Provided Below])
You could rob some NPCs though fairly easily. xD
Either way, you’re going to need a Frameshift Drive Interdictor. A higher Class (1,2,3,4) module lets you interdict people from further away. A higher Rating (D,B,C,A) gives an easier to win interdiction mini game, as well as causing less hull damage to you for initiating the interdiction.
You’ll also probably want a Collector Limpet Controller. Better controllers have better drone range and drone duration. Although not necessary it does make life alot easier as combat scooping is hard and pressing a buttom to launch a limpet is really easy.
For robbing NPCs, you’ll want to invest in a Hatch Breaker limpet controller as well, as shooting out the cargo hatches is relatively unreliable at getting them to drop their cargo. The hatch breaker shoots out limpets that will land on an UNSHIELDED ship and hack the cargo bay open and drop SOME of the ships cargo. For robbing players, a hatch breaker isn’t necessary because you’ll be asking them for a small portion of their cargo.
If you do manage to interdict a player, there is an etiquette to the piracy.
1) Don’t be a dick. Why? Because they can always play in solo if they want to. Don’t piss in the well by being a huge asshole.
2) Don’t steal too much from a single player. Why? Mostly refer back to item 1. This one is a little fuzzy on what exactly “too much” is, and as an Archon Delaine pledge, there’s certain people we just rob blind.
3) Don’t shoot before talking. If they run or try to hi-wake out, it’s your call, but I prefer to shoot out engines first before blowing them up.
Other people may disagree, and possibly for good reasons. Most of all, find a style that works for you.
Make sure you ask them to abandon the cargo if you wish to not fly with stolen goods.
What should I do when not Robbing People?
The biggest thing a pirate should realize right away, is that the Federation is not your friend. Smugglers swear by the Alliance and the Empire. Real bad asses tend to hate everyone. But no one, and I mean NO ONE!! Likes the Feds. So never support the Federation, any of the minor factions that claim allegiance to the Feds, or anyone who supports Shadow President Hudson.
Who should I support?
Lets start from the Bottom. If you look at the Right Menu in your ship on the first tab you can see what minor factions are in the system you are currently in. If you press Right while looking at the menu you will get another list of the minor factions in the system. Selecting them will bring you to a description. What you, as a pirate, are looking for are the UNFETTERED groups. This means that they do not follow any laws and are therefore pirate factions. Unfettered groups that gain control of a system will change the system to a state of anarchy allowing us to do whatever we want without incurring heat from bounties and fines.
Allegiance is a simple matter. We are a group of independent people looking to make our own way in the world so we do not, as a whole, support one specific group but Most of us have an affinity for the Alliance. Being as they are not trying to tell everyone what to do and the accept Pirates called FREEMEN into the alliance. They are the same as the Unfettered groups except they support the alliance and the alliance recognizes them. No other Galactic Government allows pirate groups into there Organizations. Some people also suggest leaving Brokers alone as they tend to fix market problems and respect pirates groups.
What about Power Play?
ARCHON DELAINE.
We have a large coalition of players who support his control of the Pegasus sector. If you are into politics and want to spend some of your time and creds towards Pirate Community Driven Goals then Pledging to Archon Delaine is the way to go. But if you don’t want to get involved you can still take advantage of the Pegasus sector. There are always Black Markets available in Archons Territory and you can make more money there smuggling even without being pledged. Its also an excellant location so start attacking the cops since his mere presence lowers the security level of systems under his control by half.
Finally I will link the Pieces of Eight. They are a group of guidelines that some of us ponder over from time to time. Like Pirate Philosophy.
“The Pieces of Eight”
1 There are No Rules Only Consequences.
2 Join or Die
3 Learn and Teach
4 Loyalty is worth more then Money
5 You are only as Good as your Word
6 Actions speak Louder then Words
7 Put Needs before Wants
8 Active Leadership or Mutiny
I, and several others take these words of wisdom seriously, almost religiously. But everyone is different. Thats what makes us so special compared to other lifestyle choices in the Galaxy. You can make your own choices here. We only ask that you back up what you say with your life.
And finally if you are still not sure you want to be a pirate and need help figuring out who you should support you may want to take a minute to check out this topic I started to help people figure out exactly what political party in the Elite Dangerous Universe.
