"Everything will be fine," he had said. "Every commander will be there, there is nothing to worry about." Yes, every commander was there, and the second part was... It was complicated. Now, hanging on the immense black and frostiness teach me something: Never, ever forget your limpets.
It's hard to say how things started. If I have to choose one point, I would choose the "Umm. What about Clarissa? Will she be there too?" part.
"Yes! Why do you think I am telling you that? The only thing we should do is taking our Type-9, selling some commodities, and making a lot of profit! She will not be able to take her eyes off you."
"Those are not one thing, but I get the point. Which system did you say we need to go in order to participate in this community goal?"
"Baal System. Cool, isn't it? BAAALLL! Like a real beer which makes you burp. Baa.."
I shot up his mouth with my hand. "Disgusting! Also, Baal is not a beer name. It's an ancient title that was given some of the evil gods, like Baal Zebub. The Shai-Tan. Are you sure there is no danger in this?"
"Absolutely yes!"
Yep, he really really said that.
We did some checks around the ship. Its name is, its name was Koca Göt, which can be translated as "Fat Ass." So, there were a lot of things we should look at. And, there was too much adrenalin in my veins to do it. It's a pity to see only now that what was happened was inevitable.
"Why we produce more power than we consume?" he asked.
"Because I replaced all of out optional internals into cargo racks."
"No shield booster or cell banks?"
"No booster or cell banks."
"My fighter hanger? I love that little buddy."
"That too. You will be sitting on the lower deck while your glamorous sister is controlling the ship and making a lot of profit. Also, you have said we will fascinate Clarissa and what I am going to do is absolutely that. If there is no danger, why bother protecting the ship?"
"Good point, sis. But, why did you take a docking computer?"
"You know. The last time... This ship is too big and chunky. I also take a collector limpet controller in case we need them for collecting more stuff."
And, checking process continued like that. When we finally departed, what I felt is a joy of adventure and the agility of the ship, which lacked optional internal modules.
"Stay safe out there, commander. Over."
"Flight Control, take care of my home; do not allow stunt ships to crush it. Koca Göt out."
Going to the Baal system took tooo much time. I should have hesitated when I saw 20 jumps on the cruise route computer, but... I was feeling happy after all of that endless frustrations and losing credits, etc. Finally, I was doing something right. No empty fuel tanks, no mail slot crushes, no docking errors... Just me, my bro, and the sense that everything will be okay. So, why would I have hesitated?
We arrived at the system, and the answer came too fast.
"What is that tiki tiki tiki noise?"
"I am checking. Our temperature is within acceptable range; That big globe glows like a star and.."
A blinding shine passed through us.
"Is this a comet?!"
"No, bro. Comets cannot be consistent that much close to a star. Those are other ships in supercruise."
"They are racing!"
"Noo, this is a dog fight! They are scanning us too!"
"This is Commander Big Bad Pirate Boy. Standstill and prepare for being interdicted. Anything but standing still ends with the fire. Do not resist and submit the interdicting. You will pay for insulting commanders by using a docking computer."
