Professor Palin. This is going to be a pain. So, in order to get his attention I need to take an exploration trip about 5k ly out. And let's be honest about this...I don't have a ship with an acceptable jump range to do this in a reasonable amount of time. So, given my limited funds, you can guess what ship I had to pony up for. Yup, and Debbie.
So, now that I have The Ceti Lobo, I need to trim this thing out for maximum jump range. I'll be reaching out to a few of my more experienced friends to do that with limited funds and limited access to engineers. I actually do have a decent handful of the engineers opened up, but they're mostly experts on weaponry or defense. I need the more mundane help...power plants, shields, thrusters. Ya know.
As I record this I'm also checking out some of the waves that my fellow commanders have sent me on what to do to trim this ship out. Some of it really looks pretty easy and obvious. I've learned a long time ago--long before I qualified as a ship commander--that "obvious" isn't always right, much less safe.
More to come, I'm sure, as I get close to launch. 5 thousand lightyears. This will be the farthest I've ever gone from the core systems. I may sacrifice some mass by including some modest insurance against catastrophic damage...AFMS, repair limpets, heat sinks. We'll see.
