Old Memories

I was here before, in a way. Not physically, sort of. It was a long time ago, but I was here. It's quiet, so quiet, as it has been for a long time. The lights are still on, nobody was around to turn them off. The secret's out now, everyone knows this is here. They've known for three years now.The Zurara
Three years ago, mere days before Salome martyred herself trying to expose the same conspiracy it was a part of, this ship was found. I wasn't here physically, the magic of tele-presence helped me get out here on a friend's ship. I saw it as if I was there, but now that I'm here physically, it's kind of...haunting. I've listened to the logs, the last words of a poor soul, sent here to die unknowingly. They're still in there, their corpses dried and frozen by the vacuum of space, but not rotten. Mummified and preserved, just like their ship, they haven't decayed. The power systems are still working on the ship, the lights are still on even and the thrusters still work to keep the ship in a stable orbit.
If only I would have known what this would have lead to. I suppose I had an idea by that point, it was a few days before Salome exposed the club. She was a useful tool in that, but she was far from the hero she claimed to be. Either way, the people who died here were actually innocent. They hadn't done anything but signed on to a job. A year or two out in the black, and a huge payday for them, only they were never meant to come back. The club sent them here to chart planets and place beacons in the event humanity was driven back by the thargoids. A wise plan, but their methods were...less than reputable. And I wonder if it's just for them and a select few to escape, those rich and powerful enough to get a ticket to Earth 2.0. Not that it would save them, if not the thargoids, the survivors would come after them. This is what was out here, what all those people were searching for in the rift and beyond, myself included. But this isn't what we thought we'd find. Some thought it was treasure, some thought raxxla, some thought the thargoids or rogue ai...well, one of them was halfway right.
I'm rambling, I know this wasn't very coherent, but I had to write down my thoughts. These people will get justice one day, and I'm not relying on some cosmic justice either. The ones who put these poor souls to death won't get any mercy from me.
Commander Jack C, signing off.
