Alarm Needs a Snooze Button

30 Sep 2022Sombient
Just how long were we in Witch-space for? All I know is I woke to sound of every alarm going off in CRASH OVERRIDE at once. Messages flashed across the HUD in rapid fire. FSD failure. Thurster failure. Heatsinks failure. Life support failure.

The ship was in a free tumble, cooking with a star close enough to touch.

Warning. 245% Heat.

The spin is becoming much faster with the star flashing past the canopy like a strobe light. Reboot the entire ship trying and it suddenly lurches back to life. In a brief moment of control, manage to get the nose pointed away from the star before the thrusters cook again. The star seems to be throwing plasma at me.

Warning. 295% Heat.

Hard to remain calm as the panic tries to sets in.
Hard not to think about how much cartographic data you have stored in the ship's memory banks.
The sweat is pouring down my face is not just from all the heat.

Warning. 320% Heat.

Manage to reboot the ship again and low wake away from the star. Nothing works and we keep juggling modules until the FSD finally shows a squeak of life. It an extremely short jump to the nearest populated system drive overheats in the process. It's mostly toast and probably shouldn't be trusted to make another jump. Life support remains offline so we synth a hit of oxygen and assess.

There's a small station here that offers repair services. Once the ship is finally down on the pad an entire line of techs come out to marvel at what is left of her. One of the techs is nice enough to find me an empty bunk on the outpost. CRASH needs a complete overhaul. Might as well get some sleep and tomorrow we'll be good as new.
