I Feel Like the Freighter

Do you remember hearing the story of the freighter pilot and the racer pilot? I recall hearing stories as a kid of how the freighter pilot and the two pilots (I think they flew a Type 9 and a Viper Mark III) got into a race for some reason. Everyone knows the Viper is faster by a long shot than the Type 9, but the freighter pilot just kept chugging along. The viper pilot, because he was so much faster, would stop to brag at stations along the way, take long breaks, and overall not take the race seriously. I mean, how could a Type 9 ever beat a Viper Mark III? Ludicrous, right? Well, the Type 9 won the race, not because it was the fastest, but because it kept going, always flying, not detouring, not bragging, just steadily making progress. Well, right now I feel like that freighter pilot.There are faster ways to my goal, yes, but I don't think they'd be as satisfying. Yeah, I could get the materials for an anti-xeno ship, and upgrade one of my two anti-xeno ships to fight the Thargoids, but that is so much commitment. I could probably use one of my ships as they are, but I'd need to group up, and I always let people down because of my other commitments and not being able to provide support for as long as they are there. So, I'll keep course, keep plodding along, and keep making progress towards my goal. That's why I feel like the freighter pilot; because I'm not taking the fastest, easiest path. But, I am still making progress and I am still going to make it. Who's the Viper pilot in my story? I guess that'd have to be my alter ego telling me that I should just follow the fast track. Maybe I'll get to see him at the finish line to congratulate him on getting there too.
