Steps backwards, yet closer to my path

I guess the hardest choice in a space filled with possibilities is the one where you need to decide what your goal is. Sure, I've dreamed about flying myself through space for years, but with that within reach, I wouldn't know I would do with this 'superpower'. So when I finally decided to get off Chamberlain's Rest and into the great unknown, I made the mistake of thinking I could just jump infinitely.
I grabbed my Sidewinder and started jumping. And jumping. And jumping. Sure, I had a fuel scoop and an upgraded FSD, but jumping just in a random direction actually felt... directionless. I was never of the spiritual side, but it was like it didn't matter that I didn't have a destination to jump towards, but it did matter that I didn't have a goal myself.
Luckily, a couple dozen of jumps in I got noticed by a Squadron. The group was an anti-pirate initiative, and a decently big one at that. They were just checking me out for any warrants when they realized I was going around aimlessly. Luckily, they were a helpful bunch, and they took me in. Skip forward a few days, and they helped me set up a bit for whatever I would be doing. It was mostly information and advice, but for someone going around aimlessly that was a bunch of help.
As for what I achieved, I've been invited by some engineers. Just what I needed, because I decided that with space being so big, I needed a way to get around faster. So I invested in a new ship already. I call her 'The Unlimited', because she's going to bring me anywhere I need to be, even when all my other ships fail. She's small, but her jump range is crazy.
That being said, jump range won't help me find materials on its own for the engineers. And with me wanting to pay back the anti-pirate group, I would need some other ships with some more firepower. So I invested in two more. One is smaller and intended for material hunting, while the other is more for taking down the unfriendly kind once its loadout is completed. I still need names for both, but I'm going to figure those out along the way.
Either way, in the end, I figured that even bad decisions can have good results with a bit of luck.
