Reefback DE-07k Voidheart Expedition Log#1
05 Aug 2022(Baron) Rigel Kynse
Back into the black for me, on another research expedition. I am heading towards the Empyrean Straits, looking for void hearts to study and hopefully have a breakthrough on their ecology and evolution. Its good being out in the deep again, I missed the quite and the sound of the stars. At least this time I'm not alone. It is strange, I am so use to the 2nd seat of the Reefback being empty, but now it seems I have a copilot. Its a strange story on how we came to be companions. I was on Shinratra Dezra a few days ago getting ready for this expedition, I was trolling the shadier parts of the station looking for stuff you cant really find anywhere else, and I came across a black-market cloner selling exotic animals. I despise men like these. I am use to cloners, and grew up around them, but in the empire we don't cage and mistreat our creations. Usually my training would not allow me to stop and intervene. But I saw the scum cloner torturing the little tamandua by pounding its cage and jabbing it with a shock rod. I am not sure what happened but before I knew it I had my hand around the scums throat and turned his shock rod back on him. While he was passed out I may have restrained him on some plumbing and alerted some of the authorities I have contacts with. After this I looked over to see that the little tamandua was hurt very badly, so I rushed her to the Reefback and modified a autodoc to work on her.
Long story short, she is fine now and refused to leave the ship even when I found a suitable environment for her in my estates at conversion, so I guess she is crew now. She has claimed the gunner seat and I may or may not have made her a little bed on it. I know what you are thinking, "oh the bada$$ ex-military explorer has a pet". Yes I have a soft spot for animals and strange things, shoot me.
Trying to think of names for the little one. She is a female northern tamandua (T. mexicana), with a lot of personality. I think she must be use to 0g because she doesn't panic when there is no gravity. Perhaps it is because the species evolved to wander around in tree canopies upside down or all different directions. I made her little magnetic bracelets around her ankles elbows and on 2 points in her tail, and those seem to work pretty well to allow her to navigate on the ship. She always gets excited when we jump between stars, and that's good because this expedition out to the Voidhearts will be a long one.
