The Novice Assassin: Epilogue

Nick wanted to be sure that he had effectively lost Persing and his transhuman bodyguards, so he made several random jumps, nearly tripling his travel time. Nick only stopped to relax after nearly running into the jet stream of a white dwarf star. While the ship ran on autopilot, Nick retreated further into the ship to tend to his wounds. He spent roughly an hour swearing and wincing as he carefully coerced the metal slug out of his shoulder. He then screened himself for any infections or fragmented shards, applied disinfectant, and covered the wound with some bandages. Finally he returned to the cockpit, letting himself float around in the bridge for a moment while he thought.
I am sitting in an Anaconda. I’m piloting an Anaconda! Even if I can’t pay to maintain the ship, I could sell it and still have a fortune!
Part of him wanted to keep the ship. Even if he couldn’t afford to fly the ship, it was not every day one found themselves in an Anaconda, much less piloting it. Still, he would have been more than happy to sell the ship and purchase a Fer-de-Lance, like the one Cartlidge owned.
You know, he could probably afford to fix the ship.
Nick fell still for a moment. He knew that all he had to do was walk away, and he would be several million credits richer. He knew that the longer he worked with these people, the higher his chances of getting killed working for them were. Why did he feel the need to help them? She wasn’t really her! Anna was gone, and helping the bounty hunter and his pet robot wasn’t going to change that.
Nick let out a sigh. He wished he had not hesitated when he had Ten in the sights of his gun. No, rather, he wish he had hesitated, all those years ago…
The faint chime of a message drew his attention to his datapad. The message was from Cartlidge.
“Have you finished your meeting?”
Nick let out a sigh and began to type. If his brother were here, he would’ve smacked him for even considering it.
“Yeah, I have what we need, and I’ve got a surprise for you as well.” He finished the message, sent it, and set his destination to their home system. “Two more jumps.”
