The Bubble Nebula

02 Dec 2016Robert Phillips
I decided to take a rather leisurely route back to the bubble. There are a number of interesting looking nebulae in our section of the galaxy, and I wanted to take a closer look at some of them. One in particular caught my eye almost by accident.

The Bubble Nebula looks like a particularly bright star on the galactic map, but when you zoom in, you can see that it is blue nebula in the shape of a bubble (hence the name!).

I headed in that direction, and could see it from hundreds of lightyears away:

A nearby star system (Bubble Sector DL-Y d34) provided awesome views of the nebula from the surface of a lifeless planet. The nebula filled up nearly the whole horizon, and eclipsed all other stellar bodies in the sky:

Arriving inside the nebula was a great experience. There is no black sky anywhere - it's all blue, everywhere you look.

I found a star system (Bubble Sector LX-T b3-1) that contained a gas giant orbited by a pair of lifeless planets with some spectacular terrain features.

I decided to take a closer look:

The size and depth of the canyons and ridges in the planets make for some beautiful vistas. the blue sky makes you feel like you're on a planet with an atmosphere, and everything has this feeling of being in permanent dusk.

One ravine had a flat base - perfect for SRV racing!
