LOG - 001
________

The Pioneer sat beneath a storm-shrouded planet, surrounded in distance by sea and mist. The Maelstrom hung overhead, birthed from unknown anomalies. It had raged for years, just as it did before when the Pioneer had the ‘’incident’’.

Clouds trundled at the storm's edge and forked bolts split through a central cumulonimbus supercell. Strikes of gnarled charge nipped scorch into the Pioneer’s hull with terrifying frequency as the sky rippled with lightning. A few ships were seen in the dirt, their withered husk remained in meditative stillness, long dead, basking in the metronomic glow of each flashing termination.

I watched from the cockpit, attempting to establish a safe route through the scattered fulmination. Salt-blasted dirt slammed into the cockpit’s glass, while spindles of repair weave held strong against the throttle. I could feel static flow through the network of circuitry connections like conduits aching to reach out and touch the storm. The Pioneer shivered, welcoming the powerful electrical surges that leapt up metal clasps on the hull, I threw the throttle to the max as a bolt dove to meet the ground.

The Maelstrom calmed as I approached the ground. The air was a screen of charged pressure around me, but the navigation systems knew how to find gaps, knew how to bend away the lightning, and loop electricity into itself to sustain the distributor. I slipped the Pioneer down through the storm’s barrier and lifted the nose, the engines inhaled ozone and humidity as they pushed past full power.

Roars thundered from overhead and bolts scattered across the Maelstrom. I swept the Pioneer toward the ground further, deploying landing gear. The reigns were in hand; the challenge issued. I deployed the ramp and walked out into the cracked dirt, “Not all who wander are lost…” I mumbled, “Well I sure as hell am.”
