It had been two whole weeks since I had last seen Sam (apart from the odd holocast call, which didn't count), and I longed to be with him again. But he was 123 light years away, in the Nevermore system. So I packed my belongings into The Last Thing, plotted a course, and set off.

After passing through LFT 1472 and Ross 730, I arrived in the Colanja system to be greeted by a message from Sam.

"Hey, Jem, I'm heading your way. We should meet up at Corriccha."

That was the very next system! With a giddily pounding heart and a huge, silly grin on my face, I engaged FSD for the unexpectedly final jump of my trip. Minutes later I was at Schirra Dock starport, crying with joy at being reunited with my lover.

Sam told me he had been provisionally classified as a cybernetically-enhanced human by the Federal authorities.

"It means I'm almost a cyborg, but not quite," he said. "The Federation's laws are funny about things like that. But I'm human in every way that counts, Jem."

Later, as if to prove his point, Sam treated me to the most incredible sex I'd had in, well, at least two weeks. Oh, Gaia, how I'd missed him!

The next morning I decided to clear the junk mail cache on my dataslate. There was the usual range of utter rubbish; lottery competitions, buy-one-get-one-free lasertox injections, Martian sandsnakes for adoption, trial offers for virtuasex sessions...

I was about to press 'Delete All' when one entry caught my eye. The sender was Marcus Trelawney. What was that doing in the junk box? Making a mental note to have my comms system checked, I opened the message...
