19th - 25th October, 3301 (Part One) On arrival at Wyrd the next day, Nathalie and I booked into rooms on the Vonarburg Cooperative starport. Sam would join us later, having taken on a couple of jobs that had led him on a lengthy detour. However, we would need to act fast if we were to catch Alvin Salmon at the Walcott Theatre, so Nathalie agreed to meet him by herself. I would once again be staying behind to wait things out.
Nathalie prepared herself for the shuttle trip down to Way. She pulled on a T-shirt and jeans, and checked her stun pistol was charged. I noticed Nath glance at me several times, a strange expression on her face, so I asked her if she was feeling all right.
"Yeah," she replied. "I was just... wondering..." Nath's voice trailed off, uncertainly.
"What are you wondering about, Nathalie?" I asked her.
"Um... you, actually," she replied, her cheeks suddenly reddening. I laid a hand on her arm.
"Oh, honey," I said. "Do you want to talk about it?"
We sat together on the bed, and Nathalie explained that she thought of me as much more than just a friend. I was touched by her confession, and on impulse I took her in my arms and kissed her briefly.
"Jem," she said. "I don't want to break what you have with Sam. Please... you must not leave him for me." I assured her that wouldn't happen.
"Don't worry, Nath." I said. "I love Sam with all my heart. I would never leave him. But you and I have a very special friendship, and I don't want to lose that, either."
We hugged each other once more, and then Nathalie went to catch the next shuttle to Way. I pondered over what had just transpired between Nathalie and I. I resolved to tell Sam that Nathalie had feelings for me, knowing that he would be understanding and supportive. I certainly didn't want it to become an awkward secret from him.
For now, however, all I could do was wait until Nathalie returned from her meeting with Alvin Salmon.
