Personal Log 91: 25th - 31st January, 3302 (Part Two)

25th - 31st January, 3302 (Part Two) My concern for Sam continued the next day. The affair with Russell and his mob had clearly affected him deeply. Sam tried to assure me that he was all right, and practically chased me onto my ship to "go and do some trading". But he had a look in his eyes that I'd seen before, and I couldn't help feeling he just wanted me out of the way for some reason.
My travels took me to Duamta, via Luhman 16 (delivering medical samples), Wolf 359 (polymers), and Mildeptu (semiconductors), during which I was attacked twice.
The first attack was at Mildeptu, where a Master-rated pilot in a Federal Dropship interdicted me and reduced my hull to 84% in no time. I managed to FSD out, only to be interdicted again by the same ship. This time, however, I managed to evade the interdiction, and continued on my way.
My second attacker was a Cobra III, flown by yet another Master-rated pilot. Firing on me with four lasers at once he quickly took my hull down to 70%, so I was again forced to FSD out of danger.
Then, at Duamta, I came under fire from a Diamondback Scout, flown by a pilot rated Mostly Harmless. A lengthy battle ended in a win for me, and I claimed my 15,000CR bounty at Miller Depot, where I was reunited with Sam. He hadn't gone bounty hunting, despite the look I had seen in his eyes; his mind hadn't been on flying, and so he'd spent another couple of days at Galileo starport, reminiscing on his days in the Federal Navy.
Unfortunately, Sam had attracted more unwanted attention from Alec Russell. Responding to a call from a friend at 36 Ophiuchi, Sam had landed on the system's fifth planet, only to discover his friend dead, shot through the head. Moments later an EMP device went off nearby, catching Sam in the blast and causing damage to his cybernetic heart valve implant. On arrival at Miller Depot he was taken straight to the medicentre for surgery, and was discharged the next day, January 30th . Another narrow escape.
While Sam was in the medicentre, I had remained on Miller Depot. I paid a visit to Alf at the King George, where my eye was drawn to an item on the Galnet Entertainments channel playing on a screen in the lounge bar...

Wy: "a bright and shining star"
Following the funeral earlier this week of the deepsoil musician Wy, sales of her debut (and only) album 'Wy mE?' have seen a phenomenal rise. This is good news for her recording label, Nymand Songs, whose profits have taken a tumble in the last two years.
It was Nymand Songs which propelled Wy towards stardom. In October 3300, talent scouts found her entertaining in a bar on her home world in the LHS 3356 system. Back then Wy was Wendy Young, a down-and-out runaway still mourning the death of her son two years earlier.
Wy quickly found a loyal fanbase for her music. Heavily influenced by her idol, Delia Nymand, Wy put a fresh spin on the soil music genre. Delia Nymand herself credited Wy with creating deepsoil music, characterised by its discordant harmonies and vitriolic lyrics.
Wy's song titles are noted for their eccentric mixture of upper and lower case lettering, as evidenced by her first hit, 'waSTEd beLIEf'. It is widely considered to be a revenge song against the estranged father of her son, Reese, who died in 3298 of the rare disease necrolysing transuterophylomycaemia.
In a rare interview, Delia Nymand described Wy as "a bright and shining star snuffed out too soon. She joins all the other greats who died before their time."
The precise circumstances of Wy's demise on 19th January have been shrouded in secrecy. Today, police revealed that the 32 year old singer's death was caused by a fatal drug overdose and slashed wrists. The coroner's verdict was death by suicide while the balance of mind was disturbed.
