I knew Nathalie well enough to be confident that, wherever she was, she would be all right. Nathalie was a dedicated bounty hunter. It was a lifestyle that I could not even begin to comprehend, but I imagined that a good part of it meant prolonged periods of maintaining a low profile.

Whether that was true of all bounty hunters I did not know, but it certainly seemed to be the case for my friend. Sooner or later, when she was ready, Nathalie would resurface. Until then, I would wait.

Sam and I decided to temporarily base ourselves at 89 Leonis. I, as usual, busied myself with cargo missions around the neighbouring systems of Wolf 397, Wolf 363 and 63 Chi Leonis.

A contract to ferry some wine to 89 Leo ended badly, when The Last Thing was interdicted and destroyed by a Diamondback Explorer. When I woke up in the Binet Port Medicentre later, there was a curt message waiting for me on my dataslate from the employer, expressing his displeasure at my failure and demanding immediate payment of the fine.

There was a far more pleasant surprise waiting for me in the medicentre reception area. It was Sarah Hodkin, Sam's sister.

"Sarah!" I cried. "How lovely to see you! But what are you doing here?"

"Working," she replied. "I'm trying my hand at a singing career. It's something I've wanted to do for a while now. I've already done a few gigs here and there to build up my reputation. Sam managed to get me a spot for a couple of nights here, at The Old 89 Jazz Club."

"I'm sure you'll make a success of it," I told her. "You've got a lovely voice."

"Thanks," Sarah answered. "Of course, it means putting my love life on hold for a bit. All the travelling around doesn't allow much time for a relationship. That is," she continued, smiling, "unless you're ready to ditch that dear brother of mine...?"
