Personal Log 128: 6th June – 14th August, 3302 (Part One)

6th June – 14th August, 3302 (Part One)Sarah's gig went down well with the jazz aficionados of 89 Leonis. Naturally Sam and I watched her performance and, whilst I didn't care for the style of music, there was no doubting that Sarah was a very talented singer.
Sam and I remained at 89 Leonis for another ten weeks, for the first two of which we never left Binet Port. What produced this spell of inactivity was hard to define. Perhaps we had grown weary of space travel, of the pressures of trading, of the threat of interdiction and the stress of combat.
During the first week of our, for want of a better word, holiday, I was browsing a social media site when I spotted a post by a businesswoman named Miriyan Thiessen...

Hi!
I've a question for all the ladies out there. But hey, fellas, feel free to pitch in if you like!
Do any of you read a digimag called 'Valentina!'? It's a women's monthly from Spica Publications.
The thing is, they're advertising a position on the magazine's managerial board, and I'm seriously tempted. The thing is, I've only read a couple of editions, so I was wondering whether any long term readers could tell me what they think of it?

Out of curiosity I looked up Miriyan Thiessen on Galpedia, which led me to a recent article in Galnet's Business & Political Supplement

Springboard To A New Direction
Thiessen is a well-known name in the dog-eat-dog world of interstellar business. With assorted ventures spanning the bubble, the influence of the Thiessen family is considerable.
From humble beginnings as Thiessen Tours on Mars in 3160, the entrepreneurial dynasty expanded rapidly into other areas, including security, mining and financial services. Yet the Thiessen name is still virtually unknown among the general public. The family has always preferred to maintain a low profile in all its dealings.
But that is about to change, following the announcement by family patriarch Darcy Thiessen that he has entered into politics.
"The Bactrimpox system will be the springboard for the Thiessen campaign," Thiessen told a packed press conference. "I have taken up permanent residency on Coney Enterprise starport, along with my wife Danika and our four grown-up children, Dara, Astin, Elian and Miriyan."
Waving aside allegations that the family had been party to illegal dealings in the past, Darcy Thiessen insisted on looking to the future. "This is a whole new direction for the Thiessen family, so it's possible that I may fall flat on my political backside," he joked. "Only time will tell. But make no mistake when I say I mean business!
"To coincide with the start of my foray into the realm of politics, I have founded a new company, called Elite And Real. The company, from its headquarters on Coney Enterprise, will specialise in land acquisition and property development. It will also offer a range of financial services. Elite And Real will be a symbol of my commitment to serving the people of Bactrimpox, and beyond."

I, of course, had no interest in the political ambitions of Miriyan Thiessen's father, but I knew something about Valentina! magazine...

Hello Miss Thiessen,
I'm not exactly a long term reader, but I have been downloading Valentina! magazine since I first went into space just over a year ago. I think it has a really good mix of articles, and I especially like the fashion and make-up pieces. The celebrity news is often very interesting, too. I'd quite like to see an advice page, to help people with their personal problems. And perhaps a section on starport commodity prices for trader pilots.
Good luck with your application, and take care,
Jemine Caesar

A few days later I was rewarded with a reply...

Hi Jemine! Thanks for getting in touch with me!
Yeah, I like the celebrity gossip, too! And I thought that was a great piece they ran a couple of months back on that singer who committed suicide on New Year's Day. Jemine, it's interesting that you've suggested an advice page. The thing is, I was thinking about that very same thing myself, so, if I do get the job I just might get the ball rolling on it.
Thanks for your support, Jemine!

I doubted I would ever hear from her again.
