“That was some real primo work. Mr. Paravo won’t be making any more noise about paying his protection dues, I hear.”

Chief Gary Winkler of the Black Omega firm leaned back in his seat, taking a drink and eyeing the hulking figure across the table from him. The two men were a study in contrasts. Whereas Gary was about style, his guest was about substance, their differences illustrated in their manners of dress. He chuckled to himself and held up a credit chip.


“Of course, Mr. Paravo won’t be making any noise anymore. Vocal cords ripped out, I’m told. That’s the kind of poetical message that keeps the creds flowing and the proles in line.”

With a cocky grin, Winkler flipped the credit chip across the table. It was caught midair by a pair of pointed metal claws. The grotesque metal limb to which they were attached smoothly retracted, the claws opening to drop the item into a natural human palm.
