“Heavens. You’re making me uncomfortable, and this is my own office.”
Veronique was being charmed and coddled, and she knew it. Nevertheless, she shifted nervously in her seat, once again feeling tiny and powerless amid the splendour of Sebastian Vega’s estate. She had been certain that her meeting with such a powerful man was a one-time fluke. She was wrong.
The woman looked up, fear in her eyes. “I thought that you only wanted information though your people.”
Vega nodded, in the faux-congratulatory way that an adult acknowledged common knowledge reported by a child.
“I did. But this is different. This is information that cannot be delivered by any means except directly from me to you.”
For a long time, she said nothing.
“Why me?”
A compassionate look seeped into the man’s features.
“Because we have the same fear, you and I: that Tausig Solarin is walking further and further along a path of ruin.”
Veronique’s eyes dropped, confirming everything that Vega already knew. His voice dropped to an intimate level.
“Yes. I knew. I’ve known all along. And I know one more thing, too: that everything was right in your world until a certain long-lost relative intruded upon both your lives.”
For just a moment, the woman’s nervousness was lost.
“Morgan.”
