SECOND CHANCES - Chapter 12

25 May 2018Jemine Caesar

It was in the middle of witchspace that the Crone again spoke to Sola, her voice the sweetest among all those of the Void. For a long time she had been silent, Sola living a life of plunder and violence and manipulation. She hated her warrior-mate, hated his father, hated the men of her clan for the covetous look in their eyes. She even found herself avoiding Arcturus, the boy on the cusp of puberty and his days as a child drawing to a close.

It had been twelve long years since the Crone had made herself known, urging only that Sola cultivate her hatred into something useful. The woman had taken the advice to heart, rising in her clan and almost single-handedly leading it to greatness. Yet the higher truths eluded her, teased with whispers and shadows of things greater than herself, lurking just beyond sight in the spectral plane known as witchspace.

Come, the Crone said without preamble.

Sola opened her eyes, seeing not the gloominess of her ship’s bridge but a planetside grove of natural beauty. Such places were abundant on New Cambria, but the demands of being one such as Sola ensured that she would seldom visit one at best. There she saw a man and woman, strangers but aloof to her presence, bodies joined in intimacy.

Why am I here? she asked.

Sola Morgana didn’t see but felt the Crone’s presence beside her, wisdom falling from every word she spoke.

Because this is what you seek, she replied.
