Today was a sad day for me. It's apparently not enough that I've lost access to my home, Now I've lost a good friend too. Let me first explain who this friend is. David, an experienced bounty hunter. I met him not too long ago at the bar on Farkas Dock. He offered his services to me as I was looking for a fighter pilot to man the fighters I had on my Imperial Crusader. He was cold and calculating. I did not think I'd develop much of a bond with him. He loved the thrill of the hunt, a kill under his belt was something to brag about. I, on the other hand, dislike killing in general. Naturally, I thought I'd come to dislike him over time. I was so wrong.
Though he was cold and paid little mind to slaughter. At times he was a source of comfort, humor even. He comforted me when I felt guilty about the pirates we killed. He knew just what to say when the alarms started blaring and the warning lights came on. He helped me keep calmed and focus on the job. I've yet to meet someone who could make my tears cease and the corners of my lips rise into a smile not a few seconds later as he could. I was starting to get used to his presence on my ship. We'd chat over coffee or as the silly drunkard took swigs of his brandy. I would even dare admit that I was starting to form a rather close relationship with him. It went beyond just being crewmates. We were good friends.
Today we took on a job. It paid a hell of a lot. More so than the jobs we usually get. David insisted we take on the job. He was confident we could do it. "Just another job." he told me. The job paid about nine million credits for only a hand full of pirates. there were only six ships on the list. I knew there had to be some kind of a catch. David's confidence had me going. I accepted the job. David went on and on about how we could get better upgrades for the ship and how we could drown ourselves in alcoholic beverages after the mission's done and handed in. So we set off to do what had to be done. Again, let me express that I do not enjoy killing. But I was now aware that more often than not, system security will come in and scoop up the escape pods and take the pirates in for detention. This made me feel better about the whole bounty hunting deal.
We jumped from Ay Indi to Nanabozho and immediately scanned the system for signals and navigation data that may point us to the targets. We intercepted a communication frequency and listened in. We found it. the pirates we were looking for, not too far away either. I've never seen David smile so wide. "This is going to be quick and easy." he told me as we locked on to the source of the signal and cruised our way over. We jumped out of supercruise and he established telepresence with the fighter and departed from the fighter bay. Something seemed off. A gut feeling screamed, "It's a trap!". There was a single Diamondback explorer. Scans showed that it was a mission target and was wanted.
It was not unusual to find a single ship at the mission locations, Usually, the smaller ships would pop in once we engaged the main target. Everything seemed normal at the time but I could not help feeling anxious upon engagement. I charged up my lasers to engage the target's shields. This is where everything started spiraling downwards. A distress signal was sent out by the target and within seconds an armada of smaller ships came in. Not just the usual six to seven ships, no. There were about ten to fifteen of them. We fought as best as we could. we tried everything.
The critical hull damage alarm sounded and we knew we were in over our heads. I told David to forget about the fighter. We were escaping. There was no chance of surviving if we stayed to fight. System security was nowhere in sight to back us up either. I started charging the FSD for supercruise. I heard a bang and to my dismay, the system warnings started flashing, our FSD module was dead in the water. I panicked, I had no idea what to do. David told me not to worry. It was hard not to but I managed to pull myself together and made my way to an escape pod. David insisted I go on ahead, that he would be right behind me.
I got into one of the escape pods. only to turn around to notice David jumping into the main seat of the cockpit. He looked over his shoulder, gave me a thumbs-up, and winked. "I've got this Kid!" he exclaimed. The doors to my pod shut. I start banging on them. Unable to speak I pleaded with him by gaze through tear-glazed eyes. "Stupid git get in your pod!", the words echo repeatedly through my mind. Time seemed to slow down. My heart was racing at a thousand miles an hour. It was hard to breathe. My pod jettisoned out of the ship. I stared at the ship from inside my pod as I drifted further and further away. The ship floating stationary, surrounded by a swarm of hostiles. I watched the lights of the ship flicker and turn off. "It's been a pleasure, Ma'am, see you on the other si-" communications cut off as the ship turned into a ball of fire and scrap metal.
I drifted aimlessly in my pod for a while. Just peering out at the aftermath of twisted metal and charred fragments dispersing outwards from where the ship used to be. Desperately trying to look for the second escape pod. I tried establishing communications with any nearby escape pods as the hostiles warped out of the area. Nothing but silence and static. System Authorities finally jumped in. They scooped my pod up and brought me to the nearest station for medical assessment. When we arrived. I asked if they had scooped up any other pods. Mine was the only one. He did not make it to his pod in time. I've shed many tears for the loss of my friend today. Rest in peace my dear friend, David. We've not known each other long but you will forever remain in thought and heart. I miss you already.
