Transcript:
I sit here today with my heart racing at a thousand miles an hour. My hands are still shaking both from fear and excitement of what transpired within the last few hours. As mentioned in my previous logs, Zed, who is my mentor, decided to take us out to experience Thargoid hunting. We've traveled all the way to Asterope and docked at the Copernicus Observatory to meet up with the rest. Besides Zed and I, we were joined by Commander Jav Marlo, Commander J-dog, and Commander Roxaria Ashcult.
Commanders J-dog and Jav Marlo acted as guides. It is to my knowledge that they were both veteran Xeno-hunters. I must say it was reassuring to have them with us. I had never seen a Thargoid before this, much less thought of getting into combat with one either. We plotted a route to a known system where Thargoids run rampant, destroying ships and even putting space stations out of commission. Upon arriving into the star system, my first task was to refuel, as I had replaced my cargo scoop in place for a fighter bay, in preparation for the battles I knew were to come. I set a course for the nearest space station.
We were in the Delphi system and the closest space station was The Oracle. I hopped into supercruise and made my way towards the station, I could not for the life of me prepare myself for the devastation I would come to see upon arriving at the station. As I jumped out of supercruise, I was met with a warm amber glow. The station was in a state of collapse. Missing a lot of supporting structures, covered in patches of a corrosive goop that was eating away at it, and steam streaming out from the entrance to the docking bays. To my surprise, the station was still functional. Albeit, only just barely offering the basic services such as refueling.
My ship's good but it's not been upgraded to the best it could be just yet. Admittedly, I caught myself second-guessing if I really wanted to participate in Thargoid hunting. If they had done that much damage to a station that dwarfed my ship in comparison, how was I going to survive an attack in my ship? I'm fairly sure Roxaria felt the same way I did. We were both very new to this. I gathered my thoughts and decided that it would not make much sense to back out, not after I've traveled so far. I also needed to prove to Zed that I was worthy of being his student.
I managed to muster enough courage to press on. Commander J-dog contacted us, stating that he had found an area with Thargoids. He told us to prepare for combat. We locked in on his beacon and made our way to his location. We dropped out of supercruise, by then J-dog and Jav Marlo was already locked in combat with the Thargoids. A cyclops roaring in the distance, dispersing swarms of pod-like biological missiles was engaging the two. I hesitated, froze in fear for a moment. the sounds that radiated from the Thargoids sent a chill down my spine. Though, I knew I could not just sit there and watch it play out. I'd have to come in and provide some form of firepower to support them.
I zoomed in towards the fight, deployed my hardpoints, and locked on to the cyclops. I learned that in order to take down the cyclops, we would have to target one of its petal-shaped limbs called a heart. It was no easy task for me, my weapons did little to no damage and I was rather scared of getting into efficient weapon range. Eventually, we started to take out the hearts one at a time. Jav Marlo, J-dog, and Zed did most of the work. After a cyclops loses one of its hearts, it'll charge up a pulse of energy, acting very much like an EMP. To negate its effects, we would have to get out of the radius or use a specialized module known as a Shutdown field neutralizer. The timing was key in doing so. it took me a couple of tries and more than a few failed attempts to get it right.
We managed to take down the cyclops, I was amazed that I survived the encounter. Though, my ship had taken massive hull damage. The corrosive weaponry used by the Thargoids ignores shields entirely and starts to eat away at your ship. I was fortunate to have Zed inform me about decontamination limpets. I'd most certainly be dead if I had not installed one on my ship. Each Thargoid we took down was worth a pretty penny in terms of combat bonds. It was dangerous work but profitable. We hopped from location to location, taking out the Thargoids. Some of us would have to make trips to a nearby station to repair and restock on munitions. We did this for a while, Zed even got the chance to take down a Thargoid Basilisk, a much bigger variant compared to the cyclops, deadlier too.
As exciting as it was to take on the Thargoids. I think I've had enough of them for quite a while. I can only take so much excitement and near-death experiences for any given time. I've returned to Asterope to rest for a while at the Copernicus Observatory. I still have much to do. I have to get back to upgrading my ships. I'm running quite low on materials I will need to upgrade my modules. I'll make my way to visit Mr.McQuinn after some much-needed sleep and a few bottles of Lavian brandy.
