Settling in

26 Sep 2021Vicia

I am settling in to the rhythm of exploring as I do it now, it would seem. After finally working out the things I did wrong about using the life-form scanners I finally settled into a new two day cycle. My python roughly takes 13 jumps between two jump points of the carrier. So I simply move down those 13 jumps spaced more or less evenly by jump range, explore the systems I reach by doing that. Then spend a night at the carrier once it jumps in at the second day. Wish I had that during that first trip down to Colonia I did last year. For one I didn't have the FSD boosters then. Which certainly limited my range. I am easily doing doubly long jumps with my python now than I did with my Diamondback, then. Also, spending some time inside the spacious carrier with it's definitely far more comfortable amenities, not to mention space in excess of the ship. Invaluable. Flying a Python instead of the much smaller Diamondback in itself is already a boon. But being able to spend a night every two days in what basically accounts for a small base every two days? This alone makes the hefty price for the carrier worth it more than a little bit. Not to mention that I have an added safety net in the carrier should something happen. Or that I have all my other ships on close call should I ever find something that would require them. Speak about an enhanced ease of mind.

Well, back to topic. With growing experience I now am able to relatively quickly identify and sample life-forms on those worlds that have them. Part of the trick I had to learn was, to know which vehicle to use to find them. Take bacteria for instance, they form flattish structures that usually are only recognizable as patterned dirt on the ground as opposed to the nonliving dirt around them. Sometimes their coloring helps to distinguish them more clearly, but most of the time they truly just look almost the same as the dirt surrounding them. So, with them being flat and barely distinguishable from ground level I quickly found it, that searching them from the ship was the way to go. Things like plants on the other hand, showing visibly above ground, often are best found using night vision enhancements on the dark side of a planet, where the dark vision highlights them much better.

Enough rambling for today
