Over thirty years ago when I was a teenager, I played a simulation called "Elite". Although it featured only a small representation of the galaxy as we know it, it was revolutionary and years ahead of its time. It won't surprise you to learn one of the co-authors was CMDR Braben, still one of the most renowned engineering and scientific minds in the galaxy today.I played this simulation endlessly, chasing that almost mythical rank of "Elite" status and from that, my dream to fly for real one day was born.
One feature of this "Elite" simulation was something terrifying which would strike in witch-space. An unspeakable, inhuman horror. Even then, the Thargoids were often dismissed as myth, or folk tales used to scare children at night but I remember the very real stories from those days. Tales of the few pilots who'd escaped with their lives telling of Thargoid ships appearing from nowhere and chasing down the kill with ruthless, effortless efficiency. Most CMDRs were dead before they could even return fire.
Over the decades, the Thargoids have passed into memory. Some don't believe there were ever encounters at all. Perhaps they don't want to remember.
After my trip out to Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4 9A today, there's one thing I do know.
Monsters are real, and they're already among us.
