Title: Dreaming of Raxxla

Last night I dreamt of the most beautiful planet I’d ever seen. It’s becoming hard to recall, yet strangely vivid at the same time. I’ll do my best to recount it here. I dreamt that I was charting a new system somewhere in deep space. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t stop running into planetary rings that seemingly came out of a strange, endless fog that prevented me from seeing more than 5 light seconds away. Curiously, I was able to pass through them without my frame shift drive dropping me out of supercruise. I began getting frustrated, unable to see anything or leave this strangely dense nebula, when I turned my ship around.

And that’s when I saw it. The fog disappeared and I saw the most beautiful sight I’d ever seen. I saw all the rings that I had been passing through spiraling outward in an impossible way, creating a beautifully intricate pattern that I could barely comprehend in the moment, and certainly can’t recall now. At the center of this vortex of rings there was a planet, brightly shining with every color of the rainbow and probably a few more colors that aren’t in the rainbow, too. It was at this moment that I began to hear music from the old earth movie, “Back to the Future,” specifically the soft version of the main theme that plays in the final scenes when everyone has their happy endings.

For a moment I was motionless, captivated by the sheer beauty of this planet. Moments later, I came to my senses, and opened my ship’s camera interface, desperate to take a photo of this beautiful wonder of space. I had to share this sight with the rest of the galaxy. This needed to be seen by everyone. But before I could take a picture, something attacked me. I don’t know what it was, but somehow it was able to attack me while in supercruise. Before I could so much as drop into normal space, my ship was destroyed.

I woke up in my cabin, drenched in sweat and heart pounding. None of that had actually happened. I was still in my ASP, somewhere in deep space, Velcroed into bed. I stayed lying there for a few moments, collecting my thoughts when something occurred to me. I got up and floated over to the nearest interface and opened up the codex to it’s entry on Raxxla. I skimmed through it until I found the part I was looking for. “…shown to bear a striking resemblance to the children’s story Princess Astrophel and the Spiraling Stars…” Could it be? Perhaps what I thought was a planet was actually a star. That would explain how it seemed to shine so bright. Maybe instead of referring to the galaxy, “spiraling stars” referred to a special star with many spiraling rings around it. Could I have seen Raxxla?

I pondered this for a moment before closing the codex. Regardless of what I saw, it was still just a dream. I turned on the cabin lights and got ready for the day (or at least the closest thing we have to day in deep space). I had exploring to do, and if Raxxla was really out there, it wasn’t going to find itself.

End log.

Quick 4th wall break: this is an actual dream I had last night with a few embellishments, but my description of the planet itself is a one to one description. I wish I could share a picture of what the planet actually looked like, but this is the next best thing. The idea that this was Raxxla didn’t occur to me until after I woke up.
