New Start

Sometimes you need to start fresh. Leave everything you know and love behind and begin anew.

Sometimes you don't have a choice in the matter.

I don't know how I got here. The locals call it Koyans. It's an independent system, but controlled by the Empire. Specifically, controlled by Aisling Duval. My ship is here. Well. I think it's my ship. I don't remember buying an Anaconda. In fact, I don't remember anything before a week ago.

I remember being woken by my ship AI detecting a ship scan. I was adrift half a million light seconds from some station in Unjadi. I wish I could see the pilots face when I replied "I can't" when he asked me to identify myself.

He must have figured I was in trouble. My shields were out, and my hull integrity at 5%. I managed to limp to the nearest station after a Reboot/Repair and get patched up. That's when I found out about my fleet.

How did I get all of this? There's a fleet carrier registered to...someone. The name has been erased. But I'm able to access carrier administration.

"Only the registered owner can access that" the station tech told me. "It belongs to you."

He went on to explain ship ownership is tied to my bio signature. Same for fleet carriers. It's impossible to duplicate or change.

"You really don't remember anything?" He asked.

"Nope. Can't remember anything before the scan. I don't even remember my..."

"Your what?"

"My name. Wait! Wouldn't my name show up when security scanned me?" I asked

"Oh yeah. It should, but I overheard security say everything came back all corrupted. I looked into it and your ships central database had some serious damage. Everything to do with your identity has been destroyed. You don't really exist."

"Fantastic." I said flatly. "What else was lost?"

"Well here's the really strange thing. Nothing. Everything else is intact. Finances, ship registry, encoded data scans, it's all there." The tech punches a few buttons on his console and shows my profile on screen.

"Also the damage done to your database shouldn't have corrupted this data. I think someone did this on purpose. You, perhaps? Are you running from someone? Something?"

I just look at him.

"Right. The memory thing." He responds. "Well, why don't you jump your carrier here. Looks like it's only 400 or so light years away, and it's got plenty of trit. We might be able to find something there. But I gotta tells you, if you're on the run and are the kind of guy to own all of this," he gestures to my carrier terminal, "then you probably also made sure every one of those ships has been wiped clean."

"I think you're right" I said. I punch in the coordinates for Koyans and initiate the jump sequence. "So. Who runs the show here? Who do I have to thank for my rescue?"

"That would be The Guard."

"The Guard?"

"That's right. The Guard of the Outer Imperial Colonies."
