Xenopsychology and Galactic Warfare

The situation in Sol is a tragedy, truly. I have no love for the Federation, but the pointless murder of innocents is always disgusting. It is not the fault of the people that their inept leadership started this war over 200 years ago, but it seems the people are the ones paying the price. Not that that is anything new. One could argue that it is the fault of the people since they are a democracy. But the Federation ceased to be a democracy centuries ago. The people have only the illusion of choice, and are, in reality, hapless pawns for the rich and powerful to use in their games of influence and decadence. They are truly innocent, for they are not given the freedom to commit the damning sins that their leaders do. Perhaps that is the blessing of oppression. I doubt that it matters much to them now, for the many dead are free of their mortal bonds and the living are too busy trying to survive.

I do not blame the Thargoids. Yes, they are responsible for the murders of billions, but they are another species entirely. It is difficult to apply the morality of man to that which is not. And, more importantly, they did not start the war, and have made several attempts at communication, though those times are long past. We have seen that they are an emotional species, though legend has it that their warriors have their fear glands removed. I believe that after their earlier attempts at communication were rejected by humans more interested in stealing their resources, they took offense and became belligerent. This has occurred at least twice in recorded history, and each time has resulted in them rejecting any further attempts by humans to make amends. I doubt they will ever be open to peace now. It is far too late. It is true to say that peace was never an option, but that's because our leaders took that choice away from us. And that is just one of the reasons I continue my work to dismantle the superpowers.

On that note, I am concerned for the well-being of the resistance members in Sol and the surrounding systems. I have not heard from them, and obviously, their campaign will have likely been interrupted by this event. I put a lot of work into building the Federation Resistance and it would be regrettable for that to have been futile. I can only hope that they have found safety on the rescue ships that are still operational. I am considering a trip to the area to attempt to rally them. I think this Thargoid invasion will at least galvanize the survivors against the Federation. They know that the blame lies with the society of leadership that has ruled the Federation for centuries, a society of aristocrats who carefully control membership in their ranks and ensure that every candidate is as corrupt as the last. Perhaps some would see this as an improvement over the downright chaos and immaturity of elections a thousand years ago, but it is still rule by the inept, no matter how you flavor it. At least the Federation isn't stupid enough to put all their eggs in one basket. While the public face of the government is on Mars, the actual administrative infrastructure is spread across multiple systems. I know several resistance members have infiltrated these various offices. At least this will ensure that the survivors can continue to operate after they are relocated.

It begs the question, then, why Sol? Of course, the human mind is quick to answer that it is the location of humanity's homeworld. And it's true, all of us can trace our ancestry back to Earth, but as far as resource value, Sol is not particularly important. Its value is symbolic, not practical. It's mostly luxury accommodation and tourism. The Federal Administration on Mars is already being evacuated, and only represents a small part of the Federal Government. So, why Sol? Well, it could be an angry, desperate response. The Thargoids are capable of emotion, so why not vindictiveness? Clearly, it's a suicide mission. Cocijo will not survive this. Humanity is simply too good at killing them, and all the Thargoids have done by attacking Sol is focus humanity's attention on it, not to mention reducing the distance the majority of humans have to travel to reach it. The destruction of Sol will anger and sadden humanity, but otherwise have very little strategic impact. The psychologist in me says that this is like a cornered animal lashing out, desperate and dangerous, but the strategist in me sees this as a textbook deception play, and it worked. Just about every human being in the galaxy is paying attention to Sol right now. If I were the Thargoids, and I had something big that I wanted to do surreptitiously, now would be the time to do it - away from Sol where humans aren't paying attention.

So, if you want to fight for the defense of our beloved Earth, by all means, do so, but for everyone else, I urge you to watch the skies. I don't know what's going to happen next, but as always, trust yourself above anyone else and never let your guard down. Things are going to change soon, and I think it's going to be big.
