I've Gotta Be Insane!

22 Dec 2024Travers
So, let's preface this story of utter Human insanity with the knowledge that this all comes about because I'm planning to build a small colony right out deep in the black, in the Tenebrae region,. That's as far east as you can go in our galaxy. Clearly this is going to present a few challenges, not the least of which will be transporting all the commodities and materials needed to construct the colony, and the bridge to get to it in the first place, and finding good systems where I can mine as much as I'll need.

But then I got thinking about the complexities of living that far away from the bubble on a permanent basis, and what I might need to consider. One of those considerations has been parts. Not spare parts as the refitting crew on my carrier have always been great at that, even scavenging what they might need from old and previously broken modules and giving them a new lease on life. The two running that operation, they call themselves Tobermorey and Orinoco for some reason, that's not their real names, do an amazing job with things that they find, things that every day folk leave behind.

This of course leaves me with the problem of new modules going forward, and especially engineered ones. I've been out deep in the black for most of this year, but was still able to take delivery of three brand new ships, the Mandalay, the Python Mk II, and the Cobra Mk V as I found a dealer prepared to ship them all the way out. So far though I've not found any dealers prepared to do the same with modules. I've no idea what might eventually be available when I get the colony built, and there's definitely not going to be any engineers available 44,000ly from the bubble.

So I got left with no real option but to buy and prep everything I might ever need, in advance, fully engineered where necessary, and stored on Olympus, that's the name of my carrier, so I can eventually take it out to Tenebrae and store it there. So yesterday I set about the process of purchasing and storing, I can't believe I really did this, more than 300 new modules. Everything from cargo racks to power distributors, to plasma accelerators. Absolutely everything I thought I might need in the future, and in every class available. Let's face it, new ships do get released from time to time, and we've no idea what they'll be or how they'll need to be equipped.

Fortunately I'm well stocked on engineering materials, though I'll still have to go out and find many more. So now begins the very long, very slow, and very arduous process of engineering about 150 or so of those modules. That's a huge job, and it's gonna take a long time. I even had to buy some more ships, temporarily of course, so I could get it all done as, annoyingly, each ship can only take life support and sensors in it's own class size, and my fleet, while amazing, has never been huge, just nine ships in total.

So wish me luck commanders, it's a grind and a half, but at least this time it's entirely self-inflicted. I'll get it done by some time in the new year, gotta really, as then begins the real work on the colony.
