Thinking of the Orphaned Children this Christmas
24 Dec 2024Travers
As 3310 draws to a close, I'm back on my carrier Olympus, sitting with the crew in the bar looking forward to the exciting challenges of the coming year, and reflecting on the year that's just been. I've spent most of it out in the black, very far from the problems faced by so many others. The galley say they have something special lined up for us for the big meal tomorrow. I'm so very happy that when I hired our chef I got very, very lucky, and one of the finest chefs in the bubble happened to be available. So I'm looking forward to the meal and the company.
However, I'm still troubled. It's good that we get to enjoy the Christmas holidays together, though so many others can't. You see the galaxy has become a very dangerous place in recent years. There are hundreds of systems in a state of war or civil war, and recent developments with the political leadership in different regions has caused further upheaval and instability.
Then there was the invasion. I simply cannot think of how many children will be spending this, and every future Christmas without a father, or a mother, or a sibling. People have been killed, and continue to be killed in conflicts everywhere. Orphans are now having to find their way through destroyed colonies, many without shelter, and many without a meal, hoping they can rebuild their lives. Most will be traumatised, many will never recover from that, and all are facing the loneliness of having their families ripped apart.
So I ask you all, Commanders everywhere. When you sit down on your carrier, in a starbase or outpost somewhere, or in the galley on your ship, and you talk to family members, friends, colleagues and fellow Commanders, that we all spare a thought for all those children, everywhere around the bubble, and that we pledge, collectively, that we will try to work to make the lives of these innocent people whole once again, and that we must never, ever allow such atrocities to occur in the future.
