nformant's Exploration / Exobiology Tips

My Ships- USS Ranger, my fleet carrier, which will be away from the bubble frequently for exploration/exobiology. I have all of the services needed for commanders exploring in the black and is open to all for docking.
- My AspX [USS Explorer] that has a 60+ ly jump range and brings along some useful modules.
- My iCourier [USS Biologist] that I am currently experimenting with
Third Party Utilities
These are the third party tools I use to make exploration and exobiology more efficient and enjoyable.
-
[li]EDCoPilot is one of my must have utilities. This program helps keep your sanity in the black for extended periods of time, and includes very useful utility to keep you notified of stars for fuel scooping, tracking exploration and exobiology credits, and tracking other useful information.
- The BioScan plugin for EDMarketConnector gives a fantastic UI overlay for exobiology. This plugin scans various data sources when you FSS a planet telling you which possible biology can be found on the body. This allows you to not waste time flying to a body to do a detailed surface scan if there is only $1MM bacteria, or maybe to have you fly 50k+ lightyears if there is a $100MM stratum for a first footfall body. EDMC also sends my exploration and system data to backend services like Inara and EDSM
- OD-Explorer is an application that, once you plot a route, tells you which systems along the way are known to third party databases such as EDSM
- SrvSurvey is useful for tracking biology scanned once on planet. While EDCoPilot can tell you how far to travel to scan the next sample, this application provides a very nice UI overlay that both tracks current scans, as well as keeping tabs on biology you tagged with the composition scanner. This is helpful for those 800m away bio's to track them as you see them while flying around
Notable Mentions
- ED Odyssey Materials Helper is useful for determining what modifications to put on your exploration ship, and tracks the materials needed to get there. Also helps with telling you what you can trade to meet your needs.
Other Tools (that I do not use)
- ED Observatory is another application similar to the BioScan plugin for EDMC. I personally do not like the UI, so have abandoned its use. This tool is, however, good for those who are looking for non-exo related exploration bodies, such as interesting features, orbits, or rings.
- EDDiscovery has a lot of the features of the tools I list above, but the application is heavy and I do not like the UI
Third Party Websites
These are some handy websites I use that are not locally installed.
- Inara, but you know that, since you are here
- Plotting routes for your fleet carrier
- Luriant's ToDo list
- An exobiology guide on the frontier forums
- EDAstro GalMap for finding unexplored space
