Back Home

It’s been quite some time since I’ve done this – longer than I anticipated and wanted if I am to be honest but life gets in the way, even in 3308. Had to set down on a deserted backwoods planet for a few months, hang up the flight suit and let the loveable fuckers back in Delkar handle everything while I was away. Not that they needed the help mind you. I’m just a cog in the machine in the grand scheme of things, but seeing the Fenris in dry dock, damn near rusting away broke my heart. Every day I would look out the window and see the hanger where she was and look up to the stars wondering when, hell not even when, but IF I was ever going to get into the Cockpit again. And then the day finally came. Getting back into the flight suit after so long was interesting – the damn things fit like gloves and I was surprised that I still fit into it after all this time, but going back into the motions of preflight checks and making sure everything was five by five was calming in a way that I didn’t think I would ever do. It wasn’t until I sat down in the seat and looked out the glass that I smiled – I was home and Fenris sounded as wonderful and dangerous as she always did. Boosting into the blackness was like a dream come true and as I pulled up the FSD for the first time in months Carina’s soothing voice counting down put a huge smile on my face…..
I could just imagine the crew of the Imperator when I asked for permission to land – my codes were the same as they were a year ago and I could just imagine the Tower calling to Saber saying something along the lines of “It’s an older code sir, but it checks out” and his shit eating grin as he gave the okay – after thinking about telling them to shoot me down just for the hell of it I mean. Landing aboard the Imperator and walking through the halls was as much of a coming home as getting back into the pilots seat and as I walked through the halls and saw the new faces, a few older ones stood out as well. As the booze and gunpowder started to pour and stories were told about the previous year it all came flooding back. This was home – not some dusty backwater planet – but here, among these fuckers I call a family.
And now, just a few weeks shy of getting back into the groove of things, here I am, standing in front of them all with VP Calhoun and an Admiral of the Federal Navy making a speech about me. One would have thought I had done something grandiose for this, but I guess the Empire does have a monopoly on pomp and ceremony. After making sure that Hudson was happy with his standing amongst the other Power’s in the System, I got a message from the Navy to take out a bandit that had been praying on stranded miners. Wild Bill they called him. Well. I’m not sure how he got the name, but just like the man of legend himself, he was cut down with extreme prejudice as I was guarding some poor bastard in a Type 9 all by himself. As I watched Wild Bills ship explode into a fireball and recalled my newest crew mate, I had THOUGHT that was all it was – but as I got back to base and logged that the mission was complete I got a Holo from the Admiral saying that he would be in within a few days to congratulate me personally and to hand over my rewards.
As I stand here in front of the FRC, the comrades in arms I have been with now for more years than I can count, I have to smile as they pin my new rank upon me – Petty Officer Mythic isn’t that big a deal for most of them here, hell we’ve got a few Rear Admirals amongst our ranks already, but for me, after only being back a few weeks, it’s amazing.
The best part though was getting the locked velvet inlaid box with the Permit for Sol, the birthplace of us all.
I think it’s time to take a Pilgrimage to see where it all began. The Khonsu needs a test run, and what better place to show the newest member of my personal Fleet than the Home of Humanity.
