I write this report while hovering over one of the newly-discovered Guardian ruins. The last few months have been torturous, to say the least. 5000 Light Years from the Bubble, only a few waypoints into the Enigma Expedition, the electrical systems aboard my Dropship failed. Fortunately it was only a matter of minutes before I was able to restore sub-light navigation, allowing the ship to maintain a stable orbit around the Star I had dropped next to.Not long after I discovered the cause of the failure: a fire that had conducted itself along the length of the ship, through various wiring and network interconnects. The FTL navigation computer was burnt out and cables welded to the interior panels. Fortunately I carry backups in the cockpit for these events. Unfortunately a navigation computer is a powerful piece of hardware and I had nothing to replace it.
Some jury rigging later and the communications computer found new life as the FTL navigation computer. How it survived the first few overheats I will never know, but I am thankful it did. The first few trials gave me the chance to program in a calculation throttle, bringing single jump calculation times to 30 minutes. There was no way I could make it to Colonia with the supplies at hand, so I made the decision to return to Shana Bei. Two months later I am back in the Bubble and ‘Eirene’s Promise’ is grounded for repairs.
The mood in Shana Bei was frenzied when I arrived, cargo ships queuing to dock at Wetherbee Orbital. This made it more difficult than usual to confirm docking clearance by light signal- I had no means of communicating without rewiring the ship again. Shortly after docking I made a point to catch up with the goings-on in EEEF. The Thargoids are nearly on our doorstep, we are trying to stall them and there have been more effective weapons discovered to counter the aliens. Given the downed state of my Dropship I allowed myself a night of rest before taking ‘Sophie’s Spirit’ on only her second mission. Over the next few days I will be collecting Guardian weapons in case the storm envelopes Shana Bei.
