PERSEUS REACH 3306 PART 1/2 - THE EXPEDITION TO SEMOTUS BEACON (Trip #8)
14 Jun 2020XhaleR
Exactly seven months ago I did my last jump returning back home from Distant Worlds 2 and haven't been out in the black since then. But now the departure for Perseus Reach is finally here and I'm really excited to get back out there on a new journey. This expedition has been dedicated to small ships only, to prove that a full-scale explorer trip across the galaxy doesn't require a large ship like the Anaconda. So I've been spending the last weeks doing a complete engineering job on my little Dolphin "XH-07 Limo-Nade" to make it a great little deep-space explorer.
Our route on the Perseus Reach expedition is set to areas which I have never been before, so I'm really looking forward to this 90KLY's journey to Semotus Beacon at the far end of the galaxy. This will be my third time visiting this awesome place and probably not the last.
07.02.3306 - THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER
Ready for another long expedition into the black. My rebuilt and fresh painted "Limo-Nade" is all set to go, but unfortunately I can't take part in the main departure and massjump tomorrow so my departure will be a day later.
09.02.3306 - DAY 1 - ON MY WAY TO "THE BUBBLE"
Here we go again! One day behind the rest of the group I could finally depart from Sol and head for WP2 in the Bubble Nebula, just over 7 kylies west.
After about an hour travel from Sol I reached another great personal achievement as I passed a total travel distance of 1 MILLION LY's in my Elite career.
Docked at Iris Vacation asteroid base for a small break after my first 1500LY's stretch and sold some explorer data before taking off. At a distance of 1971LY's from Sol I found my first undiscovered system on the expedition.
Ended my first day of the expedition spending the night at Gorgon Research Facility. This asteroid base outpost will be the last sign of civilization for a VERY long time on this massive journey. Distance from Sol: 2805LYs.
14.02.3306 - DAY 7 - WAYPOINT 2
After a 7000LY's stretch from Sol I arrived at our second waypoint in the Bubble nebula tonight. Beeing here a few days earlier than expected I decided to take the time for a revisit to my "Restless Vikings Hideout" POI which is not far away. This system has two very close binary ELW's with a nice view of the nebula. Distance from Sol: 7096LYs.
15.02.3306 - DAY 8 - MOVING ON
The first week of the expedition has passed and it is time for another massjump. As I couldn't join the first one from Sol, I definetely was not going to miss this one. We winged up around 30 ships and said goodbye to the great Bubble nebula, continuing deeper into the black. It's so nice and peaceful to be out here exploring again, super excited of what lies ahead!
And to my big surprise I also won the first round of the Perseus Reach photo contest in the "Rare Gems" category with this "Nebula through a black hole" picture.
22.02.3306 - DAY 15 - LEAVING WAYPOINT 3
Two weeks has passed since the expedition started and we have reached the Via Maris region on the Perseus Arm, about 11000LY's from home. I arrived at the basecamp at waypoint 3 a few days early and took a short exploring round in the area in the meantime to look for some exciting systems. After the first jump I found an undiscovered ELW/WW system and also other WW systems nearby. Distance from Sol: 11312LYs.
Many ships started gathering up at the basecamp the night before leaving, enjoying the beautiful view.
Moving on in another massjump towards WP4.
04-07.03.3306 - DAY26-29 - WAYPOINT 4
Arrived at WP4 deep in the Vulcan Gate region yesterday and spent the night at the basecamp enjoying the view. As I am a few days ahead of the expedition I will use the next few days to explore the nearby area. I started by plotting a course straight down to look for some exciting systems well below the galactic plane. At about -1000LY's I came over a dense cluster of Neutron stars and discovered 19 new ones within a 50LY's radius. I have never seen so many NS so close to each other. Discovered three ELW systems just around the WP system, one with a water world and the other just 9LY's from the camp.
Discovered so far on the expedition:
- 30 Neutron stars
- 70 Water worlds
- 7 Ammonia worlds
- 6 Earthlike worlds
Distance from Sol: 19856LYs.
Time to move on. It's massjump day and we're winging up heading towards WP5.
13.03.3306 - DAY 35 - EXPLORING THE OUTER ARM
We have been out here for over a month now and It's been a week since we left WP4. The stretch to WP5 was done much quicker than expected so I arrived way ahead of the others. It's almost two weeks until our next official meetup, so I have to come up with something to do in the meantime. How about some more exploring?
Found a nice spot at the waypoint to spent the night and decided to go visit the outer areas of the Perseus arm the next day.
Discovered this really nice ringed ELW on my way.
From WP5 I had plotted the course to the north-west, leaving the Vulcan Gate region for a short stretch into the Errant Marches before finally entering the Outer Arm region. I decided to start searching for new Class-O stars and started bookmarking all these "glowing" dots in the galmap that I was located along the route.
As I was getting closer to the next waypoint I had to make a decision where to go next. The meetup on WP6 is three whole weeks away so I have all the time in the world until then. Colonia is 16000LY's away and a massive detour, but absolutely possible without interfering with the expedition. And as my friend commander Asu Dragon is on his very first explorer trip and heading for Colonia, probably arriving tomorrow, I made the decision; let's head for Colonia for a rendez vous! But now it's time to land for the night to do some more detailed planning for the route.
Left early the next day to go hunting for O-stars.
"Those who seek, shall find...!!"
Shortly after crossing into the Perseus Arm region I was getting close to my first marked Class-O system and as I found an undiscovered Neutron star system before the last jump , my hope was rising. Could this be it?
EUREKA!!! And there it was! At almost 33 kylies from home I had finally found my first Class-O star!
Super excited and inspired of today's great discoveries I called it a day and decided to continue the search tomorrow on the long way to Colonia. Distance from Sol: 32959LYs.
19.03.3306 - DAY 41 - A NEW VISIT TO COLONIA
41 days has passed since we left Sol and after my 16kylies detour from the Outer Arm to Colonia, crossing three regions, I woke up to a beautiful day on Jaques Station. Took a nice long shower and went down for breakfast. It's always nice to see some civilisation and other people again after beeing out in the black for a longer period of time. My friend CMDR Asu Dragon had arrived a few days earlier and was busy doing business with the local engineers. I will be staying here in Colonia for about a week before heading back out to rendez vous with the expedition.
Did a status check and some small repairs on the "Limo-Nade" before heading down to the Universal Cartographics office to sell my 2 billion credits worth of explorer data. The paintjob will (of course) remain untouched until the expedition is over
As I was arriving Colonia from the west and not by the main "highway" from the bubble, there was much more undiscovered places along the way. I even found a few special systems that might be worth reporting to the Galactic Mapping project:
- Very small Ammonia world only 0.0927 earthmasses. That must be very close to the record.
- Brown dwarf with a 18 million km ring radius
- Binary terraformable WW's orbiting just 0.9LS from each other. Discovered just 926LY's from Colonia.
Pretty close!
I've also found a few other Class O-stars, some ELW/AMW's and a whole lot of WW's. Even discovered a system with two Helium Rich Gas giants.
A nice looking ringed AMW. You don't see them like this one every day.
Spent most of the week on engineering the "Rocinante"; my Krait Phantom which I bought during the last visit here in 3305 on my "Rediscovering trip" to SagA*. She is a multipurpose ship with two sets of outfit for both combat and mining, but right now I am working on finishing up the combat outfit.
My friend CMDR Asu Dragon who arrived a few days before me had transferred his fully combat-modded Alliance Chieftain all the way from Jameson Memorial, so we decided to help out doing a wing mission, getting rid of some enemies. This was a nice opportunity to test out the Rocinante in some real combat for the first time.
An hour later, almost without a scratch we had destroyed 35 ships, from DBX's to Anaconda's and completed the mission. Headed back to Jaques to collect a nice reward, some gained reputation and called it a day. Awesome action!
28.03.3306 - DAY 50 - "AU REVOIR, JAQUES!"
It's been a great time here in Colonia, taking a little break from exploring and finishing the engineering on the Rocinante. I've been testing the modifications chasing pirates in hazres sites and she's definetely kicking serious butt and can take a beat.
But after 10 days it is time to jump back into the cockpit of the Limo-Nade and return to the expedition at waypoint 6. Just finished loading her up with food, drinks and all the other necessary equipment needed for the rest of the journey. Really excited of going back to some more exploring again.
04.04.3306 - DAY 55 - WP6 - BACK IN THE BLACK
Arrived at waypoint 6 today to join the rest of the expedition after three weeks of exploring, including my relaxing visit to Colonia. It was nice to meet some friends at the basecamp again to have a chat before we left in another great massjump at the end of the day.
11.04.3306 - DAY 64 - MEETUP WITH THE BIG GUYS
After two months, the Perseus Reach expedition has reached WP7 inside this beautiful red and blue nebula. "Bendurion's Present" is located 35 400LY's from Sol, so we have covered just over half the distance to Semotus Beacon, our main destination. It's been a relaxing week since leaving WP6, crossing into the Outer Orion-Perseus Conflux region and the discovery of the week was a system containing two Helium Rich Gas Giants and a giant 163 earthmasses Ammonia world.
Another special and exciting occasion this week was the planned meetup with the guys from the Orion Expedition who are on the last leg of their journey to Explorer's Anchorage at SagA*.
We ended the day and our meeting by gathering up in an awesome massjump before saying goodbye, flying our separate ways! Distance from Sol: 35429LYs.
19.04.3306 - ANOTHER EXPLORING MILESTONE REACHED!
At the first day of the Perseus Reach expedition I passed one million lightyears total travel distance, and today I could open a bottle of Lavian brandy to celebrate my hyperjump #20 000 in Elite.
The "Limo-Nade" are still running like clockwork without any problems or accidents, and I arrived WP8 a few days ago at the Door to Heaven" POI. Unfortunately I missed the massjump this time, so it's been a while since I've seen any other commanders. But no worries; I'm really enjoying the nice and quiet days out here by myself, looking for new and exciting places. Decided to do a little detour to explore the Conduit region on my way to WP9.
Found a whole bunch of new WW's, a few AMW, ELW's since leaving WP7 and some other particularly interesting discoveries:
- Two class-B stars with an Earth Like moon. Also found the first Bio sites on the expedition here with some nice "Blatteum Bioluminescent Anemones".
- Neutron star with an Earth Like world
- Triple Water giants
- Brown Dwarf with an 8.5million km ring radius and a ringed Water world moon nearby.
- Black hole
- Twin Herbig Ae/Be stars with a Class-B star
Might report a few of these to the Galactic Mapping Project when I return back home and have claimed my discoveries.
03.05.3306 - LEAVING WP9
We're almost three months into the expedition now and the bubble just seems like a distant memory all the way at the other side of the galaxy more than 40 000LY's away. But still going strong out here and keep looking for more exciting and new places to discover. It's still almost two weeks before our next meetup so I have decided to take another detour to explore a new region before pointing my nose towards Dante's Inferno at WP10. The "Hieronymus Delta" region is located a few thousand lightyears northwest from here.
It was also time for another celebration here the other day as I could count my "first discovered" system #10 000 since I started my Elite explorer career! Distance from Sol: 43773LYs.
Arrived at the basecamp in the evening to join some of the other commanders before lining up for today's massjump.
27.05.3306 - A REVISIT TO THOMASKI POINT MEMORIAL
Time for another logbook update as it's been a while since my last one. From WP9 I crossed the Newtons Vault region and took a planned detour to explore the Hieronymus Delta region before entering the Formorian Frontier region towards waypoint 10 at Dante's Inferno.
Besides some new ELW's there has been a few other interesting discoveries along the way as I found a giant ringed Ammonia world at 158 earthmasses and this nice looking metalrich world with an extremely thin ring.
Arrived WP11 for my second visit to Thomaski Point Memorial, paying my respects to this fallen commander. My first visit here was almost three years ago, during my first trip to Beagle Point in 3303.
Landed at the basecamp for the night and had the whole place to myself as no one else had showed up yet.
30.05.3306 - A HISTORIC EVENT TOOK PLACE IN SOL
For space travelers like us a historic event was taking place back home on earth as the first manned spacecraft was launched from American soil in almost a decade. Today, May 30 2020 at 3:22 p.m. EDT SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launched Crew Dragon’s second demonstration (Demo-2) mission from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center with astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley onboard.
The Crew Dragon successfully docked to the International Spacestation 19 hours later.
And to honor this great event, today's massjump from WP11 was synchronized with the SpaceX launch as seen in this great video made by Cmdr Enigmatic.
01.06.3306 - A SMALL DETOUR TO VISIT MY "SOLITUDE WORLDS"
After a short stop at WP11 I continued towards the "Grand Rings" at WP12 and landed on 3 A for the night to enjoy the awesome view of the close rings.
The next morning I decided to take a 4000LY's detour eastbound for a visit to "Solitude Worlds"; an ELW system with triple WW's (two in binary orbit) discovered during my first trip to Beagle Point. Finding ELW systems out here this close to "the edge" of the galaxy is not an everyday find, so my rare discovery was reported to the GMP and registered as a "Planetary feature" POI in EDSM.
Great sunset view from one of the geosites on planet A 3 A.
06.06.3306 - JUMPING FROM THE RINGS
Returned to WP12 to rejoin with the expedition. Landed at the basecamp where some of the others had arrived.
You can't get a much more spectacular view than this for a massjump!
12.06.3306 - BEAGLE POINT
After a week of exploring high above the galactic plane finding some undiscovered gems, I could finally deploy my landing gear and touch down on Beagle Point for my third visit and it's the same good feeling every time I come to this special place at the edge of the galaxy. My last visit here was over a year ago where Beagle Point was set as the finish line for the Distant Worlds 2 expedition.
And a really nice surprise was to find the first fleet carrier that had made it all the way out here. I got my landing clearance from the "Nanachi" and to land on a fleet carrier for the very first time was an awesome experience, and so cool that it would be here at Beagle Point. The Limo-Nade is still in great shape after traveling over 150 kylies and just needed some minor repairs and maintenance. I also got the chance to sell my explorer data, earning a few more billions since Colonia. And for this carrier to make it all the way to Beagle Point, I would gladly pay my 25% tax to the owner!
After a few hours on the Nanachi, I departed and landed at a quiet place to spend the night until the big day tomorrow.
13.06.3306 - WP13 - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!
After more than four months of travel the Perseus Reach expedition is nearly completed as we winged up in space outside BP to do the last jumps to Semotus Beacon & Salome's Reach.
We're here! A bunch of "fireflies" approaching our last and final basecamp on B 9 F, the most distant reachable planet in the galaxy to this day and the finish line for this awesome journey!
An hour after leaving Beagle Point I safely landed on Salome's Reach after 127 days and 65 647.34 LYs from home. A lot of other ships was also arriving and we ended the whole thing with a SRV race down the mountain.
IT'S BEEN A GREAT RIDE! I WISH YOU ALL A SAFE TRIP BACK HOME!
