7 OCT // Orion's Nebula

07 Oct 2015ArkeMage
This is the first nebula I've seen up close.  Whatever "up-close" means out here.  I try not to think too hard on the few inches of alloy and composites separating me from hundreds of light years of space in every direction.

A few other explorers have made it out this way.  They were smart.  Only stopped long enough to refuel and ping the nearby celestial bodies.  Planets, moons, and really big rocks.  Nothing but ice and metal out here in this dense cluster of stars, but I suppose that's to be expected in a star-forge.

Right now I'm sitting just out of orbit of some derelict Jovian that's probably never known a visitor in all its history.  My eyes... the first one in the Universe to see it.  Sure hope I don't miss anything.  That responsibility can weigh on a more rested mind, at any rate.  For now, it's time to roll out the cot and space blanket.  Ha!  I guess this blanket is finally getting used the right way.  May as well... I'm going to set systems into low power to conserve energy while I rest.  I feel like I haven't slept in ages.  I need to remember to buy a seat cushion when I get back.

I brought a book.  "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.  Stood the test of time, I'd say.  I think I'll read a little before I fall asleep.

I'm not setting an alarm.  Finally have some damn peace and quiet.
Do you like it?
