It's out there, hidden in the darkness, waiting for us. Somewhere in the black of the deep space, thousands maybe millions of lightyears from Earth and yet, just a single simple jump error away. One plotting glitch from finding you.
Once you learn the truth, it has you, you can never come back from it, nothing will be the same anymore. When you learn what it is hidden from you, the idea will erode you and drive you crazy, like a Thargoid heart slowly but surely eating away at your cargo racks.
They know about it after all, ever wondered why they seem to be clustered around the inhabited bubble in a galaxy so wide and so devoid of life? Do you think it's coincidence that brought the only three intelligent species we know of so near to each other in a cosmos so well explored?
Fear... It draws everything together friends and enemies alike, lifeforms gather around the light under a dark unending night sky like moths to a flame. Look too closely into the shadow and you might just find something looking back. It prays on those who stray blindly from the light; something huge and evil, blacker than the space it moves through.
Some commanders feel it more than others, that curiosity I mean, the pull to that other place that defies all comprehension. You will feel it too if you spend long enough in witch space, you will start to hear their voices, they whisper terrible truths and a promise of eternal paradise. Deep space explorers have been driven to insanity, some chose to end their lives because the truth is too awful to comprehend. And some choose to follow what they hear, determined to find out more, they might plot a route as normal, you may see them leave but they will never arrive... At least not where you thought they would. They have reached that other place and you will never see them again nor will they ever be able to report back what they saw there.
So if you ever fly with another commander and they have that look in their eye, like they're distracted by some deep thought, some longing for another place, or they have tried to describe a place that doesn't make sense. And maybe they have some newfound expertise in hyperspace navigation, or perhaps bypass encrypted security codes, don't ever, ever let them touch your navigation computer...
