For a minute there...

Just when I thought things might've changed, sigh. This morning, my squadron and I strode confidently into our Naval contact's room only to find...nothing. There were three offices joined by a private room. All three offices were empty, completely. This was a major issue, because that made me the ranking Federal officer of an entire star system. My rank and training taught me only how to command a group of ships. I wasn't prepared to start calling the shots for the Navy on my own. Maybe I wouldn't have to though. I tried contacting my CO, Adm. Eickert, to get some actual commands. Instead he said it was up to me for once. Wow, great timing, I thought. So, I turned and explained the situation to my squadron, who immediately started offering me advice on what to do. I took it. We decided unanimously that considering this station was right on the border of Federal and Imperial space, we should strike a nearby enemy of the Federation, Senator Denton Patreus. Of course, a black-ops squadron operating independently could not be seen as an act of war, so we were by no way endangering our relations with the Empire. Instead, we planned to bully the bullies-Patreus' Sentinels, a ragtag group of civil defenders that had a knack for causing trouble with the Federation. So, we've been making jabs in the Atfero system for a while now, pausing to gather intel whenever possible. This system would be a primary target in case of war...not that I don't want to avoid war, but if it's unavoidable, it's unavoidable. This worked out until about an hour ago. Sitting in supercruise at minimum speed, pointing at the main star, we watched a whole squadron of Imperial Navy ships jump in. Obviously we cannot engage the Navy directly without inciting war, so we turned tail and hid on the planet closest to the star, which was unfortunately airless. So now we're sitting in an independent outpost called Fernandes' Progress, a very boring affair, asking around the local pubs and bars trying to find out why the Navy showed up. I'll write tomorrow...or later if anything significant occurs.
