I met the Fuel Rats and I love them

Interesting experience sunday, I decided to get involved in the community goals and headed to HIP 17692 to take on the bounty hunter challenge. However, it was quite some distance away, 37 jumps to be precise in a viper mk4.i fitted a second fuel tank calculated 2 refuelling stops and decided to go for it. first fuel stop 10 jumps in, no problem, federation system after federation system - plenty of opportunity. Set off on leg 2, hit the Hyades sector, uninhabited system followed by uninhabited system. Jump, stop, check map, no inhabited systems in range, jump, stop, check map, no inhabited systems in range.
This carries on until I'm on bingo fuel. What do I do? no friends online in range to come and rescue me...
Then I remember the Fuel Rats, a group dedicated to rescuing stranded travellers, I hit their IRC, send an SOS and within 5 minutes I get a response, "rescue pilot on the way, come to a full stop, disable all modules except life support", next thing I’m sent a directive to add a PSN player which I do, we comm up and he tells me he is one jump from my location. He arrives, I think I’m saved. In order to find me and save me we need to be in a wing and this is where is went wrong. PSN has been being a bit funny about wings this week and it wouldn’t let us join up. We tried exiting and rebooting, we tried a private group, nothing.
I thanked him for his help, switched off life support and awaited the inevitable while staring into a sun. 25 minutes I died, alone in the great expanse.
Back to fuel stop location one, paid 145k insurance premium on new viper, bought a fuel scoop & auto repair station, buddied up with a friend in a keelback, and set off again.
lesson learned 1, The Fuel Rats are a great bunch and this is what community gaming should be like.
lesson learned 2, don’t head off into the unknown without a fuel scoop.
